    Unexpected Journey for sure

Tolkien wrote a great story in one book. Jackson should not have tried to improve on Tolkien; he draws it out and adds too much and changes too much. There are many parts that are true to the story, and many other parts that are obvious attempts to tie this story to LOTR and other parts that I not sure where they come from - I haven't read all of the Silmarillion yet. LOTR had some changes but they were forgivable and many parts came from the Appendicies, whereas some of the Hobbit ones are hard to swallow. But all that being said I will go see it again and let myself be entertained by Jackson even though it is only loosely Tolkien's story.

    Hobbits are remarkable creatures.

    by Dasteds

This is Tolkien storytelling on a masterful scale, with lavish scenery, an outstanding cast and gorgeous cinematography. Dont believe the dowdy critics, who are less enthusiastic since many elements of the film were exposed previously in Lord of The Rings. In fact, the technology has improved and so the special effects are even more spectacular (especially in 3-D) which is certainly why its worth seeing more than once while its still on the big screen. The eagles in flight, the rock giants, etc are simply breathtaking. I think Martin Freeman is a much better Bilbo, more courageous and daring, like the character in the book. There is none of the tedious trembling of Frodo in the LOR trilogy. This is a magnificent tale, well told and brought to the screen with all the flair and spectacular cinematography that one would expect from Peter Jackson.

    Beyond amazing

    by chazzk

Let's get this out of the way: the movie is not a perfect 1:1 retelling of the book. There are changes. This is inevitable, and every change is for the better (except maybe cramming Galadriel in there). The pacing is slow enough to let you absorb everything and feel the weight of the journey without it being plodding and unwatchable, antics of the Company are entertaining as anything, and the FEEL of everything is just... Delicious. I cannot wait until the next one.

    The Hobbit: An unexpected Journey

Visually stunning, completely engrossing, first rate entertainment, it followed the book religiously, good story telling - it's a masterpiece of a movie. Woww... It is better than all the 'Lord of the Ring' series movies.
I would like to see it again to relive it and soak it all in. Hollywood - take note and inspiration - this is a great example of what movies should be like.

I heartily recommend this movie to viewer of all ages. Enjoy.

    Editing, please

BORING... Too many long battle scenes.... If you seen one orc getting slashed, you've seen them all. Cinematography, animation was great. Loved sets and costumes. Left halfway becasue it was too violent for my son. Even he was getting bored.

Why would anyone make a HOBBIT movie PG-13? It is unfortunate that the editing was so poor because the actors were terrific.

    THE HOBBIT

I enjoyed the hobbit. The scenery is beautiful throughout the movie. The introduction of the Dwarfs is spectauclar. Can't say enough about Thorin. There is no dwarf i n the world so masucline and sexy. Can't wait to see him again. But the movie belongs to Gandalf. Gandalf steals the movie with a quiet grace. The best scene in the movie is between Bilbo Boaggins and Gollum. There are moments the movie is slow hence the rating of "Go" rather than "Must go". Looking forward to the next installment.

    The Hobbit

    by grob212

This show delivered in every way I expected. Great story (love the way they broke the book down for the first segment of three installments), the main characters were well developed (even the newer ones), great action scenes, AMAZING cinematography - Peter Jackson transports us to Middle Earth with supreme skill and confidense. The movie slowly leaves the station, allowing us to reframe a bit from the Lord of the Rings connection, but then starts picking up the pace and never looks back. Definitely looking forward to the next movie!

    Excellent

    by KEAS

This movie was almost better than The Fellowship of the Ring in that you see more of Bag End. The cinematography is wonderful and the action is constant. The special effects were just as wonderful. The characters are brought to life just as the book tells them. The special effects for Golum are so good and that scene so well played that you would never know he is a special effect. I loved it!

    THe Hobbit

    by jilweb

Toooooo Long! Tooooo gross. Its like they took some of the Lord of the Rings, threw in way too long fight sequences, a boring Gollum sequence that had nothing to do with the movie. Im a huge fan of Lord of the Rings but I wouldn't watch this again. The part with the Eagles was the only thing I liked.

    Long but worth the money.

I wasn't thrilled by the first half of the movie but the second half was worth the costly ticket price to see the midnight release. The dwarfish songs were more charming than I had expected and the graphics were stunning. And, of course, I'm forever in love with Galadriel and any screen time given to her. Furthermore, I'm a Lord of the Rings fan (book and movie). Needless to say, I wouldn't hesitate one second to recommend this one.

    If you've read the book...

WOW!!! I was glued to the screen! What a fantastic job they did with bringing this to life!

A must see movie (but I don't suggest bringing children under the age of 8 to see it).

    Dissapointed

    by mark97

Very dissapointed with the Hobbit. It did not follow the book and it threw humor in that was out of place. Not even in the same league as The Lord of the Rings.

    For Tolkien Die-Hards and Newbies

This was a beautiful film, full of adventure and life. Peter Jackson has taken The Hobbit's storyline and perfectly balanced its childish lightheartedness with the more serious aspects of the Appendices. There are so many little aspects that die hard fans of the books and LOTR films will eat up the entire time, but it is also fresh enough to hold onto the attention of someone who has never read or seen any of them. The cinematography was great and, while a lot of people do not like the new style of film that Jackson used, if you go into expecting it to have a different feel than the LOTR films, it won't bother you after the first 5 minutes. As in the LOTR films, the writing was great and the music was brilliant. The song that the dwarves sing gave me chills and brought me to tears. This is a great family movie, though if you have young children that scare easily, be prepared for some fantasy violence and monster scenes. All in all, an amazing movie that I will be seeing again.

    The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey

This is an entertaining film with good action and great special effects. I would recommend it to all children and adolescents and some of the sci-fi fan adults I know. I loved the actors, especially the lead who played the hobbit. His reactions to the scenarios really defined and enriched the movie. The story was a little thin, I thought, and the plot was less than innovative, as it duplicated so many of the events which made the Lord of the Rings trilogy so exciting and addictive.

    And We're Walking...

    by

Yes, there is a lot of walking in this just like in The Lord Of The Rings trilogy. The journey is just begining as this is the first movie. I liked the movie over all. There are a few more tangents of explanation than I expected, but it is the first movie so there's going to be exposition.
This movie seems good for any age, although some scenes might make little ones a bit nervous.
The acting was well done. I especially like how Bilbo is portrayed; it seems very close to the character in the book. I also like the continuity with LOTR that is created by the sets, using the same actors, and a scene or two. I wasn't sure about the singing at first(although it is in the book) but it grew on me.
Watching this made me want to read the book again, and I'm excited to see the next movie.
