    Marathon of crap

    by ugadvm

Peter Jackson must believe he can put out anything and people will eat it up (i suspect he's right). I'm a huge LOTR fan but The Hobbit is a bad movie marathon all in one enormously bloated package. Radagst is the new Jar Jar Binks, the movie is better off without him.

    Great movie!

    by

This movie was definitely a good one - the acting, script, costumes, sets, digital art, and make-up were all superb. The few changes they made to the original plot were interesting, added to the drama, and kept me interested for the entire 3 hours! I will definitely see it again before it leaves theaters.

    Most Amazing Ever!!

I was highly impressed with the film rendition of The Hobbit. It began a little slow and cheesy for me, but then immediately picked up and became amazing!! Loved Shmegal, even more than before. I have no qualms with recommending it to everyone as a must see. I plan and seeing it many more times and purchasing it asap!

Bilbo is my hero! "The Hobbit"

    by

If you are like me (a 70s baby) and you remember the hobbit cartoon and the books we read, then you should've been front and center at every Lord of the Rings showing and you should've been front and center yesterday for The Hobbit. I have a Lord of the Rings weekend so often that i did not realize "Return of the King" came out 9 years ago! I had to laugh at myself.
    So to the review:
Go see "The Hobbit"! I love the way that the story is told, most recent and then a 60 year flashback! I was thinking "damn Gollum/Smeagle has been trying to get that ring back for 60 years?" Wow! The special effects were on point! No disappointment here at all. I now see why there was tension with Gimley towards Lagolus - very good Dwarf/Elf/Hobbit tale. I'm telling you if you are a fan of the story - GO SEE IT! I always get a message of hope and faith from all of these movies! I find myself tearing up because I see "Have faith! Don't give up!" in every storyline.

Standard love and hate when one story gets split into multiple movies

It was slow, it took its time to introducing the characters and story line. So to those who don't like stories and just want action from the get go stay at home. It was an OK stand alone movie but could be great with the collection of the series. It had a lot of visuals that were impressive and had some good fight scenes toward the end. Since it is an installment of the whole it leaves you hanging at the end. May not be the best movie to take small children to the theater to see, it is rather slow moving for at least the first half of the movie and may not keep their interest. Small children may be best to wait for it to come out on disk, streaming or TV.

    The Hobbit

Excellent. I did find it a little slow at the beginning but I guess was expecting it to be like the other Rings movies. Could not belive it ended so soon. Plan on going back to see it again in 3D. Can't wait for the next one.

    What Happened

    by

I understand there are sequels and you won't see everything, but his was almost 3 hours of nothing. I was so very disappointed in this movie. I expected to see more of a storyline. I fell asleep in the first 30 minutes and fought to stay awake the rest of the time. This is not in the same caliber as Lord of the Rings at all.

    Unexpected Journey for sure

Tolkien wrote a great story in one book. Jackson should not have tried to improve on Tolkien; he draws it out and adds too much and changes too much. There are many parts that are true to the story, and many other parts that are obvious attempts to tie this story to LOTR and other parts that I not sure where they come from - I haven't read all of the Silmarillion yet. LOTR had some changes but they were forgivable and many parts came from the Appendicies, whereas some of the Hobbit ones are hard to swallow. But all that being said I will go see it again and let myself be entertained by Jackson even though it is only loosely Tolkien's story.

Blah - It could have been better

    by mcbonet

I found this movie to be lacking. It was too long. Too much time was giving to fight scenes and characters running away from trouble/falling rocks. There was no character development for the dwarfs, they were all lumped in as "the company". I don't even remember half their names. There was toooo much CGI - where did the people in costumes go? I much preferred the way the orcs and uruk hai were made in the original trilogy. Those hounds/wolves that attacked at the end looked cheap. I really did not like the look of the movie - fantasy films should not look "real".

About the only thing I liked was Bilbo - and he disappeared halfway through the movie.
I was looking forward to this movie - but now I'm just disappointed.

    Love the Hobbit!

Only magic can explain how our heroes survive endless hand-to-hand combat along with crashing headlong into chasms of jagged rock, plunging bodily through uncountable wooden bridges and perching above raging forest fires.

A great escape was had by all, including this viewer.

It was a beautifully filmed movie, but ...

it was rather slow. My husband actually fell asleep during part of it. Probably will wait until the trilogy is out on DVD and then watch them in a marathon.

    Excellent

    by KEAS

This movie was almost better than The Fellowship of the Ring in that you see more of Bag End. The cinematography is wonderful and the action is constant. The special effects were just as wonderful. The characters are brought to life just as the book tells them. The special effects for Golum are so good and that scene so well played that you would never know he is a special effect. I loved it!

    The Hobit

I was a little disappointed. I expected it to follow the book more closely just as The Lord of the Rings trilogy did. Looking at it from the standpoint of just a movie on its own, it was worth watching. The scenery was spectacular! The music was incredible! The actor chosen for young Bilbo was point on! The story line was good in the fact that it set up the next two movies which I hope are going to be closer to the book. I was a little disappointed in the CG. I think the orcs look better in their earthy costumes as they are in the LOR trilogy. As a huge LOR fan and the Hobbit is by far my favorite book in the series, I guess I was let down a bit. I expected the same feel I had after watching any of the three of the trilogy and I just did not have it this time. I am hopeful that the next two will give me that feeling.

Go there and you'll have to go back again

The Hobbit is good. Not great, but good. Add a star ("must go!") if you are a Lord of the Rings fan. The visual effects do justice to author Tolkien's imagination, the characters (at least, the protagonists) are well drawn, and it is, on the whole, a fitting prequel to Lord of the Rings. It also has a nice balance of humor, pleasant scenes (like the Hobbit Hole- I want one!) and action/thrills. But while the trilogy format allows the movie to linger lovingly over details (unlike the Lord of the Rings trilogy, which had to be brutal about cutting some of the scenes in the book), it also means that we don't get very far through the book. At nearly 3 hours, it's a long movie to sit through, and word is that we must wait a year for part 2, and a further 6 or 7 months for the concluding episode. It would have been better to make this a two-parter and let us see the conclusion in 6 months or a year.
