    Beyond amazing

    by chazzk

Let's get this out of the way: the movie is not a perfect 1:1 retelling of the book. There are changes. This is inevitable, and every change is for the better (except maybe cramming Galadriel in there). The pacing is slow enough to let you absorb everything and feel the weight of the journey without it being plodding and unwatchable, antics of the Company are entertaining as anything, and the FEEL of everything is just... Delicious. I cannot wait until the next one.

    Excellent

    by KEAS

This movie was almost better than The Fellowship of the Ring in that you see more of Bag End. The cinematography is wonderful and the action is constant. The special effects were just as wonderful. The characters are brought to life just as the book tells them. The special effects for Golum are so good and that scene so well played that you would never know he is a special effect. I loved it!

    Unexpected

I was just forced to see this movie with my friend because she loves lord of the rings. At first I thought it seemed like a lame movie. HOWEVER, during the movie my heart couldn't stop beating because of all the action scenes. It was disappointing that the movie took so long yet didn't actually complete the book. But overall, VERY WELL MADE

    As good as the Rest.

    by

My grandson and I went to see "The Hobbit" yesterday afternoon and being Tolkein fans thought this movie was a good prequel. Worth seeing. Not as detailed as the other three but for us it was captivating.

Decide for yourself...go on your own adventure

This film is getting mixed reviews and the best way to make up your mind on the film is to go and see it for yourself. If you loved the LOTR trilogy then you will love The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (as a many of the cast and crew have returned). I've read the book and of course there are some differences (such as developing more minor characters, drawing out battles for more suspense) but I think it works perfectly in connecting another generation with an incredible story. I was on the edge of my seat the whole time. Everything from the sets, costumes, cinematography, acting and music was excellent.

After falling in love with the story and characters already in the LOTR, it is a treat to see some of their personal histories retold.

(If you are taking small kids, the battle scenes are pretty intense and graphic so keep that in mind.

    The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey

This is an entertaining film with good action and great special effects. I would recommend it to all children and adolescents and some of the sci-fi fan adults I know. I loved the actors, especially the lead who played the hobbit. His reactions to the scenarios really defined and enriched the movie. The story was a little thin, I thought, and the plot was less than innovative, as it duplicated so many of the events which made the Lord of the Rings trilogy so exciting and addictive.

Its a movie, not a book!

    by twmnca

An excellent movie, fun, exciting and very refreshing compared to many of the other movies of late. I can't believe it was almost a 3 hour movie, well done and I can't wait for the next one. Thumbs UP!! Caution for children due to dismemberment, great portrayal of characters and the animation was superb.

    The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey

    by Latyria

This movie is a must-see for anyone who is a fan of the books, it doesn't just focus solely on the book but anyone familiar with any of the Tolkien universe is going to be able to follow along. It was a fabulous return to Middle Earth and kudos for Howard Shore's excellent score.

    The Hobbit: An unexpected Journey

Visually stunning, completely engrossing, first rate entertainment, it followed the book religiously, good story telling - it's a masterpiece of a movie. Woww... It is better than all the 'Lord of the Ring' series movies.
I would like to see it again to relive it and soak it all in. Hollywood - take note and inspiration - this is a great example of what movies should be like.

I heartily recommend this movie to viewer of all ages. Enjoy.

    The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey

The film was good. Definitely a must see to continue your story line of the Tolkien Saga. However, I felt that some aspects of this film were lacking. Most specifically, all the enemies were CGI. I really thought this took away from the film after how the enemies were done in Lord of the Rings.

    Long, But Worth It

    by Juvi

Okay, so I'm sure I'm not the only Lord of the Rings fan out there who thought this movie was a bit long. But aside from the sores on my butt from sitting so long, I have to say, Peter Jackson did NOT disappoint! It was another epic installment in the J.R.R. Tolkein series; superbly well-written, and impeccably acted. I love how these movies make one feel like they are a part of this gorgeously mystical world, sharing in this amazing adventure. I always leave the theater feeling a bit like my old self again, and I'm sure you will, too.

Oh, and get ready for the sequel!

Lord of the Rings -- Episode 1 Style

If you love Lord of the Rings, you'll like The Hobbit. Great acting, spectacular landscapes, and amazing visual effects are sure to win it some awards. Attend in 3D if you can. A few new songs will likely have you humming later. The Hobbit is an obvious extension of Lord of the Rings w/ several favorite characters returning along w/ at least 14 new ones. Gollum is creepier than ever and likely too scary for small children.

Star Wars fans may associate this film with Episode 1. A few scenes have questionable value, some "characters" are just odd, and several characters aren't adequately developed. Still, the adventure storyline is intriguing and the mix of action, horror, drama and mild humor will keep you engaged.

    >> PROS: Cinematography, visual effects, acting.
    >> CONS: Very long, limited character development, under-developed storyline.

    You gotta go...

If you loved LOTR, you have to go (obviously). The Hobbit isn't groundbreaking like LOTR was, and much of it feels a bit like a do-over. There were times when I thought they just spliced up the original music score and "re-applied" it willy-nilly (not a major complaint though). Also, some scenes go on too long -- they feel a little indulgent -- like Peter Jackson "knows" he can go on as long as he wants, so he does. Neverthess, in the end, I was won over. Can't wait for the next installments.

    What Happened

    by

I understand there are sequels and you won't see everything, but his was almost 3 hours of nothing. I was so very disappointed in this movie. I expected to see more of a storyline. I fell asleep in the first 30 minutes and fought to stay awake the rest of the time. This is not in the same caliber as Lord of the Rings at all.
