Decide for yourself...go on your own adventure

This film is getting mixed reviews and the best way to make up your mind on the film is to go and see it for yourself. If you loved the LOTR trilogy then you will love The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (as a many of the cast and crew have returned). I've read the book and of course there are some differences (such as developing more minor characters, drawing out battles for more suspense) but I think it works perfectly in connecting another generation with an incredible story. I was on the edge of my seat the whole time. Everything from the sets, costumes, cinematography, acting and music was excellent.

After falling in love with the story and characters already in the LOTR, it is a treat to see some of their personal histories retold.

(If you are taking small kids, the battle scenes are pretty intense and graphic so keep that in mind.

    Unexpected

I was just forced to see this movie with my friend because she loves lord of the rings. At first I thought it seemed like a lame movie. HOWEVER, during the movie my heart couldn't stop beating because of all the action scenes. It was disappointing that the movie took so long yet didn't actually complete the book. But overall, VERY WELL MADE

    I enjoyed the movie

What else is there to say?

I am not going to compare it to the books or anything, but rather just look at it as it is, a prelude of sorts to the LOTR and how the ring was found.

I can say that I enjoyed it. The visuals are great. The CGI is great. I will note that I did not watch it in 3D and generally do not watch anything in 3D. I do not see where it adds anything to the movie.

My only complaint is I wish all three parts came out at the same time....

    The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey

The film was good. Definitely a must see to continue your story line of the Tolkien Saga. However, I felt that some aspects of this film were lacking. Most specifically, all the enemies were CGI. I really thought this took away from the film after how the enemies were done in Lord of the Rings.

    The Hobbit: an unexpected journey

Yes, the graphics were great, the scenery inspiring, and at least the one scene between Baggins And Golem was excellent, but overall the movie was too long with a constant repetition of the same chase scenes. I don't think two more films are justified. Not likely to go to them.

They brought the characters to life.

I went to the midnight premier with my two daughters and several friends, all of us in costume, all of us Tolkien freaks and nerds. I thoroughly enjoyed the movie and can't find a single fault with it. I enjoyed the addition of lore from the appendix of The Lord of the Ring and the Silmarilian in the movie, it added depth to the story and played quiet well, especially the inclusion of the Necromancer and Radgast the Brown. After the movie we all went to Denney's for something to eat and during the ensuing conversation about the Dwarves I pointed out that Ballin was killed in Moria and it was his tomb that Gimli stood on while fighting the orcs. One of my daughters friends, a young lady in her twenties, started to cry. Peter Jackson, you brought the Dwarves to life.

    Expected and delivered

The Hobbit was a well done rendition of the beginning of this story. Long movie for how far into the story it actually got, however.

I was heartened to see that compassion, love, loyalty, and forgiveness all got leading roles. While my socks stayed on, I really liked this flick way more than the critics thought I should. Boo to them.

Yay for Bilbo and Gandalf and the forces of good in the world. Well, at least the "up with my side" rendition.

Blah - It could have been better

    by mcbonet

I found this movie to be lacking. It was too long. Too much time was giving to fight scenes and characters running away from trouble/falling rocks. There was no character development for the dwarfs, they were all lumped in as "the company". I don't even remember half their names. There was toooo much CGI - where did the people in costumes go? I much preferred the way the orcs and uruk hai were made in the original trilogy. Those hounds/wolves that attacked at the end looked cheap. I really did not like the look of the movie - fantasy films should not look "real".

About the only thing I liked was Bilbo - and he disappeared halfway through the movie.
I was looking forward to this movie - but now I'm just disappointed.

    The Hobbit: An Unexpected WIN

I do not even know where to begin here. I suppose I'll start by pointing out the accuracy was astounding, next to nothing was added or eliminated (which partially makes up for the immense length) and the continuity made it unbelievably easy to follow. The effects were magnificent; it took time afterward for me to remember that more than half of the movie was completely computer-generated, and that our protagonists weren't actually battling hundreds of goblins, enormous Orcs, living mountains, and riding the backs of twenty foot eagles. let's move on the acting; Martin Freeman could not have been a more appropriate choice for Bilbo Baggins. He played the role perfectly, to the point where his mannerisms and voice were exactly how I had imagined them when reading, each of the actors fell perfectly into the part they played, the result is a masterpiece. This movie is one for the ages, each and every component is phenomenal in its own way. I will greatly anticipate the next installment.

    The Hobbit: An Unexpeced Journey

I am a fan of the first triliogy, and I expect to be a big fan of The Hobbit. triliogy. The movie was long, and in some places it was slow, but of course picked up during the chase and battle scenes. I noticed some aspects of the book that was just a mention had a lot of screen time. I did not remember the Elf Queen so prominent in The Hobbit, nor the mountain pass scene dealt so vividely. Guess I need to go back and read it again. I liked the movie, and have to say I like what Peter Jackson has done to bring this to life. Martin Freeman has done a good job on his own adding to what Ian Holm has already done.

    As good as the Rest.

    by

My grandson and I went to see "The Hobbit" yesterday afternoon and being Tolkein fans thought this movie was a good prequel. Worth seeing. Not as detailed as the other three but for us it was captivating.

    Peter J drops it again

    by Amra

In "The Hobbit" Mr. Jackson again moves forward on the assumption that he is a better storyteller than Tolkien, & he is, as ever, wrong. PJ deserves thanks for stunning visuals, due to his choice of John Howe and Alan Lee as lead designers, but "TH" has its furry feet tripped up by new/changed scenes crammed with cliches & clumsy exposition, even where the original scenes covered the same ground with evocative imagery & blessed brevity.
The white orc's addition was actually clever, w/the weaving of him into the extant plot handled well, but many scenes were chopped w/o reason. PJ saved maybe 4 minutes running time by truncating many of JRRT's brilliant songs, many clever quips, & the main riddle in the riddle game, only to add a boring, clumsy intro that would have been better served as flashbacks in "Far over the Misty Mountains Cold". "15 Birds in 5 Fir Trees" & "Down, Down" were sorely missed! When Rankin-Bass' anime feels a truer tale than a $180M epic, something's very wrong.

    And We're Walking...

    by

Yes, there is a lot of walking in this just like in The Lord Of The Rings trilogy. The journey is just begining as this is the first movie. I liked the movie over all. There are a few more tangents of explanation than I expected, but it is the first movie so there's going to be exposition.
This movie seems good for any age, although some scenes might make little ones a bit nervous.
The acting was well done. I especially like how Bilbo is portrayed; it seems very close to the character in the book. I also like the continuity with LOTR that is created by the sets, using the same actors, and a scene or two. I wasn't sure about the singing at first(although it is in the book) but it grew on me.
Watching this made me want to read the book again, and I'm excited to see the next movie.

    The Hobit

I was a little disappointed. I expected it to follow the book more closely just as The Lord of the Rings trilogy did. Looking at it from the standpoint of just a movie on its own, it was worth watching. The scenery was spectacular! The music was incredible! The actor chosen for young Bilbo was point on! The story line was good in the fact that it set up the next two movies which I hope are going to be closer to the book. I was a little disappointed in the CG. I think the orcs look better in their earthy costumes as they are in the LOR trilogy. As a huge LOR fan and the Hobbit is by far my favorite book in the series, I guess I was let down a bit. I expected the same feel I had after watching any of the three of the trilogy and I just did not have it this time. I am hopeful that the next two will give me that feeling.

    pleasantlypleased

This movie was so much better than the critics opinions. The first hour of back story is a must for anyone who hasn't read the book or watched LOTR trilogy. Excellent movie!!! Would watch it again. Can't wait for the next one.
