    Surprising!

I wasn't sure what to expect. We had warning some thngs had been added......
I love that they kept the song the dwarfs sang about their home when they were at the Shire.
I love that the ponies were so cute!
The rock creatures were new and it added excitement to the movie....that was cool.
That was an awesome angle on the view of Rivendale! Love it.
The white ork was a twist, but he was scary if that's what they were going for.

    The Hobbit: An Unexpeced Journey

I am a fan of the first triliogy, and I expect to be a big fan of The Hobbit. triliogy. The movie was long, and in some places it was slow, but of course picked up during the chase and battle scenes. I noticed some aspects of the book that was just a mention had a lot of screen time. I did not remember the Elf Queen so prominent in The Hobbit, nor the mountain pass scene dealt so vividely. Guess I need to go back and read it again. I liked the movie, and have to say I like what Peter Jackson has done to bring this to life. Martin Freeman has done a good job on his own adding to what Ian Holm has already done.

Blah - It could have been better

    by mcbonet

I found this movie to be lacking. It was too long. Too much time was giving to fight scenes and characters running away from trouble/falling rocks. There was no character development for the dwarfs, they were all lumped in as "the company". I don't even remember half their names. There was toooo much CGI - where did the people in costumes go? I much preferred the way the orcs and uruk hai were made in the original trilogy. Those hounds/wolves that attacked at the end looked cheap. I really did not like the look of the movie - fantasy films should not look "real".

About the only thing I liked was Bilbo - and he disappeared halfway through the movie.
I was looking forward to this movie - but now I'm just disappointed.

    very little story

too much empty / filler content. not much happens in this movie. somewhat entertaining, but i left feeling i watched a bunch of drawn out scenes that bring you to the beginning of the actual 'adventure'.

    The Hobbit

The movie started a bit slowly but picked up well. The story line followed the book very closely. The acting and cinematography was great. The 2 hour and 49 minutes passed quickly. I was surprised when it ended. I was upset with it being broken up but the break was at the logical place. Over all I loved the movie.

    A Review of The Hobbit

Grade: C+. Overall, the movie is enjoyable. There are certain instances when dramatic license is taken. As far as being faithful and/or harmonious with the book, some of those instances work out and some do not. There are some places the movie is not faithful to the book and, in my opinion, license is taken in a way that makes no significant improvement to the movie over what the books says. There are important but not crucial elements that are completely left out, which to a Tolkien fan would have improved the movie significantly. Fandango does not allow me space to go into detail. The visuals for the movie are delightful, and the acting is pretty decent too. However, key instances of a lack of faithfulness to the book, where to a reasonable mind it would not have resulted in a poorer movie to do so, are the real downfall of this movie. If making a movie is a craft, I would not rate this as high as the LOTR trilogy. Somewhat of a letdown for a Tolkien fan like myself.

    Good, But Disappointed

This looks like it's the beginning of the Hobbit story, leading all the way up to the main action. There is only a little action in it as this is the part of the book where you learn about Bilbo. I hear someone say that there are 3 books to the Hobbit. I hope there are no 3 movies of the Hobbit. If the director was going to just introduce us to the charters and spread it over multiple films, he could have at least made this movie shorter. The Hobbit story is Epic, However, do understand that Epic novels/stores can't be shortened too much. The film adaptation of Aragon and the Last Air-bender are great examples of trying to cram Epic stores into too short a time frame, they just looked fragmented and the story quality is lost. I hope the next Hobbit movie is a little more concise, without going to far in abridging the story.

    B-

Paid full price for an incomplete movie, but IMAX 3D was worth it as it proved to be one of the visibly-stunning pics this year. Everything else seemed to be incomplete. I understand that this is the foundation for the next trilogy, but it didn't need to be so obviously a third of a movie. This didn't happen with the initial LOTR. Still was quite interesting and worth it for the visuals.

    The Hobbit:An Unexpected Journey

We all LOVED the movie! It is a must see. The plot stayed true to the book. The actors were good and believable. The cinematography is amazing and similar to that found in the LOTR series.
Because of the intensity and fight sequences, I would be careful how young of a child goes to this show. We had several families with young children, leave. My 10 year olds were fine but had read the book before seeing the movie.

    Hobbit Review

    by

I really enjoyed the Hobbit. Having been a fan of LOTR movies, and never have written the book. I feel I was explained the story and had some great visuals. The score is amazing! Howard Shore does a great job at bringing new themes to the movie while keeping the underscore of the LOTR trilogy. Seriously to me the soundtrack alone makes this movie. The CGI was a little off for me at times, and it took a little while for my eyes to adjust to the cinematography, but that is very minute nit picky details. Overal I would say 4/5.

Exciting, funny, and enjoyable all around

Took my 10 and 12 year old who had both read the book. They enjoyed the Hobbit more than the LOTR Trilogy because Peter Jackson was able to include more details from the book.

Phenomenal beginning to another sure to be storied trilogy

    by thobbs3

The Hobbit had all the make-up of the Fellowship of the Ring with more of a lighthearted feel to it, due to the source material. We see familiar faces joined with never before seen characters, including a company of 13 dwarfs and a new eccentric wizard, all of whom have a unique personality. Although some characters get more face time than others, Peter Jackson does a fantastic job of making each one relevant. Although the escape from the Goblin's stronghold is reminiscent to the fellowships escape from the Mines of Moria I feel as though the villains receive more development, namely the Goblin King. I was skeptical of turning a 300 page book to 3 films but, with the inclusion of Gandalf's side quests and the return of the Necromancer I have no doubt these 3 films will be just as action packed and memorable as the previous trilogy. All together I thought the deviations from the book were warranted and actually proved to be significantly better than a direct translation would have been.

    The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey

Martin Freeman gives a splendid performance as our hero. I'm disappointed that the movie was shot at 2x usual speed- it was very. distracting. The dwarves were lovable, but some were a bit clownish. I was delighted with Thorin- Thorin was everything he was supposed to be in the book. The "Pale Orc" subplot was sloppy, it wasn't even in the book, and even worse, the orcs and the wargs were CG. It would have been better to leave the evil to Smaug (and Gollum, who was absolutely brilliant and kept saying "shut up" at himself) and divide the story into 2 movies. The goblins were very sloppy, and King Thranduil was a little fake (riding on his CG moose) but the eagles were better this time around and that was huge. The Shire and Bag End look as if we had never left.
The dwarves' song is hauntingly beautiful, and the main musical theme for the movie (same tune) is mind-boggling-ly brilliant.
Over all, The Hobbit is definitely worth seeing. And the end is very. very. cool.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey = Absolute cinematic GENIUS!

This is one of my all-time favorite movies. The right combination of action, adventure, suspense, humor and sensational acting! LOVED IT! I took my 2 teen-age daughters and a teenage boy as well, and everyone only hated that it ended. It seemed like an hour and a half, not 3 hours. The only complaint is that we wanted more!

Young children may be frightened by a few of the darker characters - there are some scary scenes with clashing of swords and fighting, but the gore is minimal and not overly gruesome.

The storyline was extended without damaging the integrity of J.R.R. Tolkien's intent. It is believable, the scenery is breathtaking and aside from one scene of fighting by 'creatures' on a mountain, very true to the original.

A MUST SEE picture. We will go as a family several times and definitely next time to IMAX 3D!

    The Hobbit: An unexpected Journey

    by Bodean

There is a lot of new story line that I do not remember from the book but I am assuming were based on Tolkien's notes but with that said it is a great story telling in its own right. As good as we have come to expect from Peter Jackson.

    Loved it!
