    Beyond amazing

    by chazzk

Let's get this out of the way: the movie is not a perfect 1:1 retelling of the book. There are changes. This is inevitable, and every change is for the better (except maybe cramming Galadriel in there). The pacing is slow enough to let you absorb everything and feel the weight of the journey without it being plodding and unwatchable, antics of the Company are entertaining as anything, and the FEEL of everything is just... Delicious. I cannot wait until the next one.

Its a movie, not a book!

    by twmnca

An excellent movie, fun, exciting and very refreshing compared to many of the other movies of late. I can't believe it was almost a 3 hour movie, well done and I can't wait for the next one. Thumbs UP!! Caution for children due to dismemberment, great portrayal of characters and the animation was superb.

    Good movie....not great.

I liked the movie. It was entertaining for the duration. However, if I was not a fan of the Lord of the Rings trilogy, I don't know that I wouldn't have liked it less. Special affects were outstanding! Acting was great! Script was very good! There were a couple of scenes in which the BS flag was a distraction though (wont go into what scenes so I dont ruin it for anyone else). I was also not a big fan of the end, but each movie of the trilogy left you wanting at the end as well. Good strategy to set up the next chapter.

Great movie, but was expecting a little more.

The cinematography was gorgeous. The special effects were superb. The music was enchanting. The acting was great. It was refreshing to see familiar characters from LotR especially Elrond and Galadriel.
I would have to say that Gollum was the best part of the movie. Out of all the characters in this movie, he had the most depth. I truly sympathized with Gollum. I cannot say the same for any of the other characters. On a whole this movie was very weak with character development. I don't really feel like I got to know the characters like I did in Lord of the Rings. I think this was not the mistake of the actors, but rather the screenwriters and director. Hopefully, this won't be a weakness in the next two movies.

    An Unexpected Ending?

I had not read anything about the movie prior to seeing it, with the exception of IMDB ratings. I had expected Peter Jackson to go with the formula of one movie per book (The Hobbit, Fellowship, Two Towers and finally ROTK), so I was shocked when the movie ended prior to the storming of the castle and slaying of Smaug. I was a bit dumbfounded and disappointed until I whipped out my phone and learned of a second part.

Up until the end, the movie was everything I had come to expect from another entry into Peter Jackson's adaptation of Tolkien's epic fantasy. Much of the story was spot on with the book and there was lots of the action and comedy that made the previous films so great. It was great to revisit all of the familiar creatures and places after nearly 9 years since the release of ROTK. I anxiously await part two, and the completion of the best set of fantasy films of our time.

I recommend this film to any fan of the books or the movies, you will not be disappointed

    The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey

The film was good. Definitely a must see to continue your story line of the Tolkien Saga. However, I felt that some aspects of this film were lacking. Most specifically, all the enemies were CGI. I really thought this took away from the film after how the enemies were done in Lord of the Rings.

    THE HOBBIT

I enjoyed the hobbit. The scenery is beautiful throughout the movie. The introduction of the Dwarfs is spectauclar. Can't say enough about Thorin. There is no dwarf i n the world so masucline and sexy. Can't wait to see him again. But the movie belongs to Gandalf. Gandalf steals the movie with a quiet grace. The best scene in the movie is between Bilbo Boaggins and Gollum. There are moments the movie is slow hence the rating of "Go" rather than "Must go". Looking forward to the next installment.

    Hobbit - I loved it!

I made the mistake of listening to reviews prior to seeing the Hobbit. I think it was a GREAT movie! I really loved it and I am very happy that I get to see a part two. I often leave "Lit-Flicks" thinking that the movie was just a shell almost like a book cover and not a true representation of the book. I've read the Hobbit and dearly love the book, and the movie was great! I don't know if I would have enjoyed it as much if I didn't already love the book and hadn't already read the book more than once.

GREAT job .. Peter Jackson et al

    by asaph

Magical, wonderful trip through Middle Earth. Not sure how Tolkien would feel about the plot subdivisions, but great story telling, sweet effects, endearing dialog, convincing acting and gripping action.

This really is a movie to be seen on the big screen too. Excellent.

    Hobbit

In the long run I did like the movie quite a lot and would recommend it to be seen, I will say that it took a little while to get the plot running.

    For Tolkien Die-Hards and Newbies

This was a beautiful film, full of adventure and life. Peter Jackson has taken The Hobbit's storyline and perfectly balanced its childish lightheartedness with the more serious aspects of the Appendices. There are so many little aspects that die hard fans of the books and LOTR films will eat up the entire time, but it is also fresh enough to hold onto the attention of someone who has never read or seen any of them. The cinematography was great and, while a lot of people do not like the new style of film that Jackson used, if you go into expecting it to have a different feel than the LOTR films, it won't bother you after the first 5 minutes. As in the LOTR films, the writing was great and the music was brilliant. The song that the dwarves sing gave me chills and brought me to tears. This is a great family movie, though if you have young children that scare easily, be prepared for some fantasy violence and monster scenes. All in all, an amazing movie that I will be seeing again.

    Dissapointed

    by mark97

Very dissapointed with the Hobbit. It did not follow the book and it threw humor in that was out of place. Not even in the same league as The Lord of the Rings.

    Better than Expected

    by cina-ma

I was not especially interested in seeing this film. However, I was really pleasantly surprised. Yes, we whiz through dozens of exciting adventure, one after another; excellent graphics and creativity, but a tendency to get tedious after almost 3 hours.
What saves this movie, however, is that the story revolves around wonderful characters who are lovingly portrayed, and their growing connection to each other. And yes, the battles whiz by, you get the impression, but do not suffer through excessive graphic violence.

    Most Amazing Ever!!

I was highly impressed with the film rendition of The Hobbit. It began a little slow and cheesy for me, but then immediately picked up and became amazing!! Loved Shmegal, even more than before. I have no qualms with recommending it to everyone as a must see. I plan and seeing it many more times and purchasing it asap!

    THe Hobbit

    by jilweb

Toooooo Long! Tooooo gross. Its like they took some of the Lord of the Rings, threw in way too long fight sequences, a boring Gollum sequence that had nothing to do with the movie. Im a huge fan of Lord of the Rings but I wouldn't watch this again. The part with the Eagles was the only thing I liked.
