    Go - But....

This movie is not for everyone and I have told my friends - I liked it - but I am not recommending it because it isn't your typical movie - the plot is a passage in time and the interaction between what is the mirror image of two men. It is about corruption of men - one from the horrors of war and the other by his ambition. The movie challenges the audience - BIG TIME - if you want it to rage against religion - it doesn't - it if you want it to give you the answers - it won't - this is a movie that wants you to experience this place, time, and characters and asks you to figure out - which of these men was the more noble. So go and make believe you are being transported - don't think it - just sit and let it happen and see what you walk away with - that is the kind of movie this is. Oh - and if you dislike Scientology and corrupted organizations that are faking they help people - then go - because the Hoffman character is true to L Ron Hubbard and the insanity he really was.

    The Master

One of the worst movies I have ever seen. It dwelled on meaningless dialogue and scenes of close ups that didn't seem to add anything to the betterment of the movie. The cinematography was OK but there should be some balance of telling the story and dwelling on scenes where the understanding and emotion had already been fully achieved.

    So so good!

    by

Oh my gosh! This movie was like totally the bomb. I don't know what the like, normal viewing was like because I saw it in 70 mm which was really really authentic I think and made it more, you know, believable. I didn't really know what to expect, which is good, because my mind was totally open and ready to just... receive. The acting was so so good and I thought it was interesting the way the whole thing just unfolded and you saw how the characters developed and stuff. It's for adults who like to see new things that are artsy.

    Mindless

    by Opaque

Hollywood is very poor at making ?art? films. The film, ?Master,? underlines this fact. Now the professional critic?s who are not bright will rave about the film, to look intelligent, but the movie is worthless. Yes you have good actors but nothing can save this poorly written script. I?d say the crazy protagonist when in a movie theatre, getting a hotel bellhop to hand him a disconnected phone (no wireless in those days) is funny but not profound. At that point I was too bored to get into the message that this part of the movie is a fantasy.

    I want the two-hours back

    by

While the acting and direction was first rate, the movie suffers from a lack of plot and cohesive story line. The four of us left the movie asking "what was the point of it all?". The parallels to Scientology were interesting but not compelling enough to make this movie interesting.

While I would not be surprised to see Hoffman and Phoenix nominating for awards for their performances, it was just not an enjoyable movie experience.

    The Master

The acting was superb but the plot was nonexistent. It started out well enough but then just left everything hanging out there... One thing for sure, no one can do crazy like Joaquin Phoenix. Which begs the question, how much of that is actually acting?

Long movie, hard to sit through

    by emmgee

I like movies that make you think. This one made me think, "What in the heck is this movie trying to say?" It's visually very interesting and the acting is great ? it just didn't make sense to me.

    Ready for Anything

I have heard that there are 8 plots that most Hollywood movies follow?this is not one of them. If you want something a little more challenging, I recommend it. I found something profound about the relationship between the 2 main characters that still remains a mystery. Note:I see the word "cult" a lot in reviews, but during an interview with Bruce Kirkland of the Toronto Sun, director PTA said "I don't consider that we are dealing with a cult." Stretch your mind a little bit and go for a ride. (Be ready for anything?it made me uncomfortable.) I hope this helps.

    The biggest waste of talent

    by pctu7x1

Although I consider all of the actors great talents, this movie was a total waste of my time and their talent. I left before it was finished. It never got any better.

    Still wondering

I was very optimistic about The Master. It has incredible character actors, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Joaquin Phoenix and Amy Adams. However, I am still very confused about what the point was. Was the point the bizarre friendship between Joaquin Phoenix's character and Philip Seymour Hoffman's character? Was the purpose to show the influence of the "cult of personality"? I felt that Amy Adams gave a bit of a chilling, dead on performance and I enjoyed watching her. I felt that the acting was great, but in terms of where I was supposed to be going as an audience member, I am still in the car, waiting on a destination.

    The Master

This movie was awful. The lead actors are all amazing, wonderful at their craft, but I ask myself..."How did they decide to act in this poorly written movie?" Do not waste your money.

The most horrible movie I have seen

I love almost all kinds of movies. However, I found this movie truly disgusting and having no purpose. It tries to masquerade as art, but it fails beyond miserably. Joaquin Phoenix does look like a miserable, sick alcoholic, so he did succeed at that. It is filled with closeups of Phillip saying nonsense over and over. I would never recommend that anyone see this movie. Safe your money; believe me, I would love to get mine back.

    I just didn't get it

    by jro67

Sometimes I think critics mark certain movies as brilliant, Oscar contenders because they think they would look foolish if they don't go with the pack. The Master certainly had potential to be a thriller, a comedy, love story, or just a commentary on cults..but it missed the mark on it all. I left the theater confused about what the films objective was. If it was just to showcase great actors and direction, that was achieved...an all star group who carried their lines and characters with skill. The problem was that though they owned their roles...there was no place to take them...no culmination, no finality. Everyone was adrift and when the credits appeared, so was I.

    The Master

    zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

I don't mind spending the $$ for a great movie, but I can not remember the last time I went to a movie and waited on a line because it was so amazing-maybe Titanic...& even that was remake. What happened to great up lifting movies like Back to the Future...ET...Deer Hunter...Terms of endearment, FARGO. There is no more creative writing being done anymore.
The Master would only interest people who are some how involved in drinking some kind of cool aid or a shrink!
