    The Master

Im a huge fan of both stars of this movie Hoffman and Phoenix. However I have to put it into the category of the worst film either one has made. Depressing, tedious. Just poor entertainment. Th ePeter Travers of Rolling stone review suckered me to see it. Half the 10 people in the theater at 59th and third in Manhattan walked out. I saw Philip Seymour Hoffman in TheLast Quartet at Hamptons film fest, that film is actually a gem. The master is real bad.

superbly executed with a side order of nuance

    by pburris

Perhaps Mr. Anderson's most subtle and mature work yet, The Master doesn't deliver quite the same pace of Boogie Nights, nor the savage passion of There Will Be Blood. Yet, I'd deem this a better work than both of those (and I enjoyed them a great deal). I might argue that Magnolia gives The Master a run for its money, in terms of ensemble casts and epic scale, yet The Master succeeds precisely because PT Anderson has scaled BACK a bit, His insistence on driving at one story with multiple dimensions proves beneficial for his direction of talented cast members with ranges capable of astonishing us. Joachim Phoenix and Phillip Seymour Hoffman, already accomplished talents, dig deep here to showcase their characters' competing fears and strengths, their grudging courage, and their frailties.

As thorough a Tour de Force as The Master proves to be, I do think it could have lost half an hour in the editing room to no deleterious effect

    Seriously don't waste your $$$

    by

Walked out truly scratching my head...did I just not get any of this? What was the point of the movie. Kept waiting for it to come together and be blindsided by an ending that would have me thinking...wow, did not see that coming. Never happened. Pointless movie, entirely too long...very disappointing indeed.

    the master

    by lutieah

joaquin phoenix, as always, takes his job seriously ~ he should win the academy for best actor next time around. phoenix developed his character into a man suffering from ptsd with a hidden tenderness and explosive intensity as only he can do. philip seymour hoffman, who also always takes his job seriously, should be nominated for best actor . i can't imagine any other actor being able to take his character to a higher level (except maybe joaquin!) the two play off of each other with what seems an effortless and natural chemistry ~ the best part of this film and the only part that kept my interest. i recommend going just to see these two actors' performances. not for kids

    Terible waist of time

    by

This movie really made my nice Sunday a torture. It is almost as bad as "Tree of life".
I understand the greatness in the actors performances .It was a showcase of good acting but the substance was poor. We all know lame *** drunks exist and that mad professors take interest in such subjects and over analyze their weaknesses but please there should have been at least a heartbeat of quality dialogue.

    Absolute Rubbish!

My wife and I Walked out of this film. Totally wasted our evening and money! I guess the only plus was that I guess the film did a good job at protraying what a nut-job this guy was. What was Amy Adams thinking getting involved in such a sick and depraved film. I'm sure there are going to be tons of people who will say they liked it but if you are an intelligent and normal person I wouldn't waste my time....it's disturbing that there are people walking around that would actually enjoy this film and see "beauty" in it. Ugh!!!!

    Don't Go

    by stelo42

This is perhaps the worst movie I have ever paid to see. I can't believe it, I kept waiting for something to happen and it never did. These two actors are very gifted but they were acting for the sake of acting ($$$). They should be ashamed of themselves for luring people in to see this. Oh yeah the ending made no sense.

    The master

I knew the actors involved with deliver Oscar worthy performances, but I found watching this film slow torture. This story of lost souls drawn to this cult was sad, pathetic, and disturbing, The plot was unclear and inconclusive .
I haven't walked out on a film in years, but came close to doing so last night!

Could have been so much more

But it wasn't. I didn't care for The Master. The story lost itself in several places and I think the actors failed to make a real emotional connection of student and teacher and then student becoming master.

The movie was nothing special and worth waiting for on Netflix or Amazon.

Worst Film I Have Ever Seen!!!

This is by far the worse film I have ever seen, and I am 70 years old. The movie had no story line, events made no sense, and it was nothing more than a non-sensical chain of stupid, unrelated actions. Acting was good but nothing else was.

    The Master? Meh

    by

Well, just saw "The Master", that much praised effort from PM Thomas and I'm not as impressed as I thought I would be given the outpouring of awe from the film critics that I usually rely on to guide me. It was opaque. And I'm happy to see a movie that I need to think about, and that I think about a lot, and that I have an evolving opinion about, but when its just not amenable to further inspection because its all between the director and his Own Private Idaho, then its not a good movie. Here's an example, when you see the word "Redum", well, there's a little secret in there waiting for you. But lets say instead of Redrum, its "Gritiffix," a word that the director made up. The director doesn't get any Linda points for that.

The emperor has no clothes. Don't go just to walk out.

You see the actors and go great. You see the reviews about how you have to watch it several times to really appreciate it and you think maybe. Then you watch the first thirty minutes with people walking out and it is easy to join them. Don't waste those 30 minutes.

"The Master" is a great movie but not for everyone

Seems like people either love "The Master" or hate it. I enjoyed it very much, but it is not your typical Hollywood entertainment. (If you've seen anything by this director, then you know that already) So if that's what you're looking for, don't go. If you want an intriguing, thought-provoking, often strange and bizarre, but usually fascinating experience, then you will enjoy this movie. The centerpiece of the movie consists of two masterful performances by Phoenix and Hoffman. The question you have to think about throughout is who - or what - is really The Master. I think the answer to that question is the point of the movie.

    The Master - Review

Saw this movie yesterday. Joaquin Phoenix's performance was extraordinary. Certainly he should receive an Oscar. It was actually difficult for me to watch him at certain points as he apparently lost a significant amount of weight and looked haggard and much older in order to play the part of Freddie. The effects of war on those involved in military conflict are so damaging. Walk the Line is my favorite movie and to have seen him looking so well, albeit the dark times, is a drastic difference than his appearance in Master. The cult's manipulations and hypocricy left me feeling angry as I've been involved in 2 religions, one mainstream and the other a cult (for a short period of time). I know from experience the devastating effects that religion has on people. I'm glad that Freddie left the cult, even though he returned to his drinking and carousing ways.
