    The Master

Crude, shallow, disgusting sexual content. I can't believe I sat through the whole movie - I should have walked out and am ashamed I didn't do so. Complete waste of my time and I wish I could get my money back. I already wasted over 2 hours watching this movie, so I will not be spending anymore of my time writing about it.

    THE MASTER

Loved the cinematography. Joaquin Phoenix & Philip Seymour Hoffman always delightful to watch and give new meaning to "opposites attract". Two very tortured souls in their own right. Film was a little long.

    Masterpiece

I rate this a "GO" for it is a stimulating portrayal of the exotic philosophy of the mind, an exploration of deep regret, love, and religion of men. So, why is this a "GO" and not a "MUST GO!", you wonder?
This movie will not thrill all. Obviously there is a difference between independent and hollywood films, so ask yourself which you are in the mood for because that will largely affect your perspective of this film.
I think this movie is fantastic and Thomas Anderson once again amazes and hooks viewers. I guarantee this is a movie people will be consumed by and undoubtedly as most of Anderson's exceptional films everyone will have a unique way of explaining and understanding the character's motives and desires. The truth is not quite clear in The Master and it will be an exhilarating ride for all who are open to it.

It was ok, but not worth the time wasted to watch it.

The acting was good, but the story was confusing & their was no real clear point to the movie.

It was hard to follow the story with it jumping around in time sequence.

P.T. Anderson is still good at making movies, it turns out.

This movie is another gem in P.T. Anderson's string of excellent films! Extremely deliberate, and often uncomfortable, The Master managed to keep me riveted the whole time, largely due to Phoenix's outstanding and unpredictable performance. If you like P.T. Anderson's work, definitely go, but if you are looking for happy endings, simple narrative, or kid-friendly material, this probably isn't the movie for you.

    The Master?

This is not a movie for everyone. This movie is more of an intellectual film or a movie for those who love acting. The actors were excellent and the story was OK. This movie also has a strong psychological undertone and symbolism.

    Huh?

This had to be the most vapid, self important, "intellectual" waste of time I have ever watched. I finally understand why the Hollywood elites are so in love with Obama.

    Terible waist of time

    by

This movie really made my nice Sunday a torture. It is almost as bad as "Tree of life".
I understand the greatness in the actors performances .It was a showcase of good acting but the substance was poor. We all know lame *** drunks exist and that mad professors take interest in such subjects and over analyze their weaknesses but please there should have been at least a heartbeat of quality dialogue.

    Seems strangely familiar

    by Wayno

This movie reminds me of a cult religion we may all know well from the news, but it's cleverly disguised here. Philip Seymour Hoffman plays the cult leader who takes in Joaquin Phoenix's character and takes him on a truly wild ride! It's hard to tell if Phoenix's character is truly daffy or if he's just lost all hope in his life. The other stars in this film are little more than cameos, but Hoffman and Phoenix make this movie truly worth your time!

    Master of What????

I agree with JenniferRStorm, this was the WORST movie I've ever seen. There were eight of us in the theater, and when it was over, we all took a sigh of relief that it was over and done. NO ONE at that viewing liked it!!!

    The Master

Loved it! This movie is not for everyone, but if you love Paul Thomas Anderson's films this is a must see. It was visually beautiful and the performances remarkable.

    Pretentious and pointless

We went to this movie because the reviews were outstanding, the actors are first-rate, and the trailer suggested there was a plot and character development worthy of attention. The professional reviewers either haven't seen the movie or are hallucinating. The 2 hours and 20 minutes are a complete waste of time. The movie was painful to watch, as subplots and characters appeared, then vanished without explanation, and one deeply profound close-up was followed by another, unattached to even the hint of a coherent story line. The only reason we didn't walk out after 10 minutes was faith in the reputation of the actors and the reviewers. In the end, we could only conclude that this faith was misplaced and that the film is a complete waste of time.

    Worst movie ever!

    by Memasan

I don't normally push my opinions on the general public, but out of kindness....and in the interest of saving others their precious time and money.......I am breaking my own rule. This was the worst movie I have ever seen! Pretentious, boring, pointless, plotless and long-for-no-good-reason are adjectives that come to mind. As a point of reference, I saw The Tree of Life and am calling this the worst movie ever! The critics are full of crap in their effusive praise of this one!

    Even the mighty stumble

After WWII, an alcoholic, sexaholic veteran drifts around the west coast, finally stowing away on a yacht commanded by a meglamaniac cult leader--this was supposedly a movie about Scientology (and they did protest the film), but it's not really. Powerfully acted and masterfully directed, this film doesn't go anywhere; characters don't evolve or learn anything, situations remain unchanged after 137 minutes. Half of the 12 people watching this movie walked out within the first hour; 4 more walked out after the "nude" scene. I know there's more to the film than I caught, but I don't want to sit through it a second time. Phoenix gives the performance of a lifetime, Hoffman is good as well, and Amy Adams plays against her lovability quotient quite effectively.

I really like the films of PTA, but he stumbles here.

A big meandering pile of WTF?

    by

The good - the acting, cinematography, music and such is all fine. Great cast, and if you were to pull any scene out of the movie and watch it by itself, you'd probably think "wow, I really want to see this movie!"

But when you pull them all together? It's a big steaming pile of "why did I spend two hours and 17 minutes watching this?" The movie is a rambling mess that never makes its point, if it had one in the first place.

If you enjoy watching actors chew scenery for two hours with no conclusion, by all means line up to see it. Otherwise? Skip it.
