The life of one of America’s most brilliant and controversial generals is the subject of 1970’s Patton. What gives the film its true period epic feel is how many of World War II’s most crucial battles and strategic maneuvers are staged; from campaigns in northern Africa, to D-Day, to the fall of Germany. George C. Scott’s performance cannot be overlooked, and many people have come to find Scott and the real Patton inextricable.

Resurrection should be here as well as Rob Roy Braveheart The Kings Speech.

The real miss is somehow having so many films about Roman Republic/Empire, and somehow miss Cleopatra. That's a Hollywood Lush Budget Period Piece bar none, and the making of it is a period piece of 1960's A-list Hollywood itself. Pick one Godfather and replace it with Cleopatra = Much better list.

Wonderful Cinematography, great cast, awful movie. Walked out after viewing about 50%, need I say more?

Good list but, for me, missing a few... Rob Roy, raise the red lantern, master and commander, glory, angels and insects, impromptu, amadeus, cinema paradisio, pale rider, the big red one, I include these last two because I believe that they are more important as period pieces than as western or war pictures.
