Technically, the latest version of The Thing is a prequel to John Carpenter's The Thing, which was supposedly a remake, but more of a re-imagining of the original The Thing. But anyways...in honor of all these versions, we present our top 5 greatest, and top 5 lamest sci-fi remakes!

“Arguably better than its source film?” Really? Although the advent of CG technology allowed Carpenter to make a movie that was much closer to the original story “who goes there” in concept than James Arness’s “plant-man-from-the-stars” but here is otherwise no comparing the two movies. The original had a script that required amazingly skillful acting because special effects couldn’t erase the need for it, and instead of one shock-scene every forty seconds, the original gave us a few real good ones that stick with you forever and Ken Russell? Has he ever been in any thing that wasn’t a z-grade movie? The remake is, as the reviewer points out, “arguably” better than the original, but then the moon is “arguably” made of soft green cheese.

wow, so many things about your comment are wrong. The acting in the 1982 Thing movie was excellent. It had many horrific scenes that were unforgettable. Like the dog kennel scene, the CPR headcrab scene, the blood testing scene... And who the hell is Ken Russell? And whats all this about CG in the 1982 film? They used puppets... -_- Your probably the only person who thinks that way about that movie.

You are so correct kashmir. Wtf, CG wasn't even around at the time and all the effects were created with traditional materials. It was based so very closely to Joseph Campbell's story "Who Goes There" which was written in the 1050's. "The Thing from Another World" was great movie based on that story but it was not close to it even thought the effects could of been accomplished through other ways like dissolves or transitions. Lol, Ken Russell. Shows what you know.
Correction- It was written in the 1950's and btw read the story. It's like a novelization of the 1982 movie.

If you don't even know which movies used CG, and who Kurt Russell is, how are we suppose to take your comment seriously?

Agreed. Everything in The Thing in 1982 was practical effects. Where the hell did you see CG?

Not a great list Can't agree on Lost in Space or the Godzilla movie , both were pretty good The best remake list.. left me wondering what other remakes might be more deserving. I am Legend had serious plot holes, War of the worlds..really?

I am Legend was good. But the original "The Omega Man" with Heston was great. I do think The Thing-1982 version was excellent. Kurt Russell was perfect as MacReady. I like the trailers for the new version. Going to see it tonight. Will let you know what I think about it.

Your list of bad remakes is flawed. The original Day the Earth Stood Still was fantastic! The remake was horrible. The Smith kid crying to Klatuu about his dead dad was supposed to make the alien change his mind regarding eliminating mankind. WHAT CRAP! It just proves one thing. That there's a lot of drugs in Hollywood and they're not sharing with the rest of us!
