I'm gonna have to say the best movie adaptations were Jumanji, The Princess Bride, and The Wizard of Oz. The first few Harry Potter movies are also up there.

How could you forget “The Secret of NIMH,†based on the (way better) children’s science fiction (NOT FANTASY!) book, “Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH The movie is well loved (mainly by people who never read the book), but it alters the very genre of the source material. The book is very good science fiction for kids and has NO magic gemstones or other fantasy elements (there's an actual reason that the animals can talk). Turning an SF book into a fantasy movie would be tantamount to (in reverse) if Peter Jackson had altered “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King†such that Sauron is NOT defeated by dropping the One Ring into the Crack of Doom, but instead by having the USS Enterprise phaser Barad-Dûr into atoms from orbit.

Whale Rider should be on that list along with Prince Caspian, A Little Princess (1995), The Black Stallion, Stardust, and Matilda.
Another film that is often overlooked is The Secret of Roan Inish based on the book Secret of the Ron Mor Skerry by Rosalie K. Fry.

My family wishes that someone would make the Redwall Series into movies.

Second the Redwall comment. But do check out the TV mini-series.

Why is the Secret Garden on this list? When I was a kid, I thought that movie was sooooooo boring.
