UPDATE: THR reports that Snyder is denying rumors that he is developing a Star Wars spin-off movie. Snyder's spokesman said, "While he is super flattered because he is a huge fan, Zack is not involved in any way with the new Star Wars. He is currently in post on his two films, Man of Steel and 300: Battle of Artemisia."
EARLIER: We may not be any closer to knowing who the director for the first of Disney's new Star Wars trilogy will be, but Vulture is reporting that Zack Snyder (Man of Steel, Sucker Punch) is currently developing a spin-off film. The film would be a standalone movie that takes place outside of the planned trilogy.
The untitled Jedi epic would be loosely based on Akira Kurosawa's 1954 classic Seven Samurai, with the ronin and katanas being replaced by Jedi knights and lightsabers. As far as where the film would be set in the Star Wars franchise, Vulture reports that it would take place sometime post-Episode VI, suggesting Disney's franchise development is much broader than originally thought.
It was revealed late last week that Disney was looking into bringing the Star Wars franchise to TV, similar to the way Marvel has spun off S.H.I.E.L.D. into the ABC network's primetime television line-up.
Last October, when Disney acquired LucasFilm, CEO Bob Iger had mentioned that the company would explore ways to expand the Star Wars franchise. While the company develops this spin-off with Snyder and explores the possibility of a television series, we're still left with the big question of who will direct Star Wars: Episode VII.
Disney sped up the 3D re-release dates for Episode II and III this year. Episode II will arrive in theaters September 20 and be followed by Episode III on October 4.

Why not get Zack Snyder to direct Episode VII? If he isn't developing a spin-off movie, then he should be considered to direct Episode VII, once he finishes with Man of Steel and the new 300 movie.

I think the 300 Director Zack Snyder can do justice to the new franchise STAR WAR movie(s) just don't stray away from the heart-core of what made LUCAS Films Classic magic. So whoever takes on the Sci-fi adventure project..'I hope they take real good care of it/and that they get plenty of solid foundation help. I look forward to the new Star War franchise plus Snyder's MAN OF STEEL*Superman movie and oh my goodness 300: Battle of Artemisia (if it's a prequel) it would be nice if Actors Gerard Butler and Micheal Fassbender can reprise their bold/charismatic roles. Awesome Epic movie 300!!! Love it.
