You Rate the New Releases: ‘The Muppets,’ ‘Hugo’ and ‘Arthur Christmas’

Ah, is there nothing better than the Monday after a long holiday weekend? Wait, don’t answer that. So how many of this week’s new releases did you see? This Thanksgiving holiday weekend was not only packed with a trio of family-friendly movies, but it also included (in some areas) sneak screenings of two Christmas flicks, War Horse and We Bought a Zoo (the latter of which I saw, and enjoyed).

While, on Friday, I threw out a prayer to the box office gods and asked them to make The Muppets the big victor, the Twi-hards proved to have more influence, helping Breaking Dawn, Part 1 to its second victory in a row with $42 million. The Muppets held its own though, producing $29.5 million for the three-day slot and $42 million over the five days. Happy Feet Two ($13.4 million for the three-day; $18 million for the five-day) took third, with Arthur Christmas ($12.7 million for the three-day; $17 million for the five-day) and Hugo ($11.3 million for the three-day; $15.4 million for the five-day) rounding out the top five. Though it doesn’t seem like that large a number, it was still good enough to give Martin Scorsese his third-highest debut ever behind films like Shutter Island and The Departed.
 
But just because Hugo came in fifth place doesn’t mean it’s the worst film that opened this past weekend. All the critics have had their say (on Rotten Tomatoes the three new releases have enjoyed tremendous praise, with Muppets leading at 98% Fresh, followed by Hugo at 96% Fresh and Arthur Christmas at 92% Fresh), so now it’s your turn to sound off with opinions on the Thanksgiving flicks.

    The Muppets were very good but i felt the movie was more on the humans romance then the muppets. It would still be a great movie for the whole family.

    Sorry, didn't get a chance to see any of these Family movies: The Muppets & Hugo I wouldn't mind checking out. I bet each film above are quite adventureous for the whole Family...'looks fun & enjoyable.
