As we approach the always-popular Fourth of July holiday, Hollywood is doling out a ton of options for your next trip to the multiplex. While we wait for Spider-Man to make his much-anticipated return to theaters in just a few days from now, here's what your weekend at the movies looks like, complete with everything from male strippers to a foul-mouthed talking teddy bear.
What's the Scoop: Based on Channing Tatum's former life as an exotic dancer, Magic Mike stars Tatum as a veteran dancer who takes a young performer (Alex Pettyfer) under his wing, introducing him to a world full of sex, money and a whole lot of partying.
Why It Might Win the Weekend: How about 2 hours worth of eye candy? You like candy, right?
What's the Scoop: From the creator of Family Guy comes this raunchy comedy about a man (Mark Wahlberg), his girlfriend (Mila Kunis) and the ridiculously inappropriate talking teddy bear that comes between them.
Why It Might Win the Weekend: If you're looking for a little potty mouth in your weekend, this is definitely it. And while the onslaught of offensive jokes are what make the film hilarious, it also has a lot of heart and wears it all over its fur.
Madea's Witness Protection
What's the Scoop: Tyler Perry brings his most famous fat suit-wearing character back to the big screen, and this time hilarity ensues when an investment banker's involvement in a Ponzi scheme leads him to take up residence inside Madea's southern home for protection.
Why It Might Win the Weekend: Tyler Perry's film always do well in their opening weekends, especially when Madea is the featured character. The film definitely has competition, but never count it out.
People Like Us
What's the Scoop: Chris Pine (remember him?) returns to theaters opposite Elizabeth Banks in this sweet, uplifting film about a guy who sets out to meet the sister he never knew existed.
Why It Might Win the Weekend: Probably doesn't have a shot at topping the box office, but if you're looking for a new release that's good for your soul, this is it.
My Prediction: Like I said, never count out Madea, but I have a feeling Magic Mike and the boys are going to take it this week. Channing Tatum naked for the win!
My Pick of the Week: It's the film that won awards at Sundance and Cannes, and now that it's in theaters you really need to see it. Beasts of the Southern Wild is ambitious and emotional and unlike any film you'll see this year. Take a chance on this flick and find out why everyone is gushing about it. Read more about it in Derrick's Sleepers to See column.
Alright folks, I'll shut up. Now it's your turn to tell us which film you think will win the weekend box office ...
