We've arrived at the end of another week, and while we continue to wade through the various films gaining the most buzz out of this year's Sundance Film Festival, there are three new wide releases in theaters to keep us busy (especially those of us currently suffering through a nasty bout of frigid weather). Let's take a closer look ...
Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters
What's the Scoop: Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton star as a grown-up Hansel & Gretel who track down and kill witches for a living. Hmm, wonder why they do that?
Why It Might Win the Weekend: It's R-rating may keep the real young ones away, but those looking for a more action-packed spin on the classic tale will find plenty of badassery in this one.
What's the Scoop: Jennifer Lopez pitches this as Out of Sight meets The Transporter, and she'd probably be right. The cool, calm and collected Jason Statham is her co-star for this one, about a wronged thief who disguises himself in order to exact revenge upon his former crew.
Why It Might Win the Weekend: You don't get a much sexier combo than J-Lo and Statham. At the very least, this movie will look real pretty as it jumps, kicks and shoots its way straight to your heart.
What's the Scoop: An outrageous, over-the-top comedic anthology featuring various short films directed by and starring lots of familiar faces.
Why It Might Win the Weekend: Well, for starters, it's hard to turn down a movie that stars Gerard Butler as a Leprechaun. We kinda want to see it just for that.
My Pick of the Week: In limited release is this the trippy festival favorite John Dies at the End, about two college dropouts who attempt to save humankind from an invasion of otherworldly proportions. If you like your sci-fi a little twisted, you'll definitely need to check this one out.
My Prediction: This is easily the most difficult prediction to make so far in 2013. I think it'll come down to last week's winner Mama and Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters, with the latter barely winning out thanks to the added bonus of 3D. Still, though, this weekend can really go either way.
Alright folks, now it's your turn. Sound off below and let us know what you'll be watching this weekend in theaters, as well as which movie you think will win the box office.
