'The Wolverine' Trailer Delayed... But Does it Even Need One?

James Mangold’s The Wolverine was expected to have a trailer in theaters and online by now. Some fans speculated that the first look at the anticipated sequel would be attached to this weekend’s A Good Day to Die Hard, which is distributed by 20th Century Fox (like The Wolverine). But Mangold used Twitter to tell fans it likely wouldn’t arrive until the end of March … leaving fans to speculate that it could be attached to G.I. Joe: Retribution

Here’s a question: Why does The Wolverine even need a trailer?

Seriously. This will be Hugh Jackman’s fifth adventure in Logan’s trademark claws. It is a direct sequel to a standalone Wolverine movie. The audience for Mangold’s The Wolverine likely are going to see the movie with or without seeing a trailer. At this point, a trailer only is going to spoil footage that fans can absorb when the movie opens in its entirety at the end of July.

I’m not saying every film needs to reach theaters without the benefit of showing a trailer. The general movie-going audience likely doesn’t know what Beautiful Creatures is without having seen clips before the movie opens.

But The Wolverine is a rare case where Mangold and Fox have made it this far without ruining the film by showing a revelatory trailer, so why start now? We basically know what we are going to get out of a Jackman-led Wolverine movie. Let us go into the film with no spoilers. It would be a bold move.

Filmmakers like J.J. Abrams are going to great lengths to protect their massive blockbusters, realizing that too much gets revealed by Internet campaigns and marketing blitzes before a movie finally opens. I would love to see The Wolverine just say, “We don’t need a trailer. Fans, come on July 26, and we’ll have a great movie lined up for you.”

It would make me all the more excited for The Wolverine. How about you? Do you agree?

I disagree! And you have your facts WRONG - it is not a direct sequel to the standalone Wolverine movie! Mangold clearly says that on the interview on the official movie website. And a trailer is totally needed - as it also lets you know when a movie is coming out - so the more casual movie goer who feels like seeing an action flick will know whats out. I do agree that I hope it's a short trailer and doesn't give too much away.

It needs a trailer soon. A lot of movies fail if marketing is not good.

It is NOT a direct sequel to X-Men Origins! How many times does that need to be said!

Have to disagree on this one. The movie trailer serves as a litmus test for watchability and is part of the film experience itself.. A good part of the reason for the fervor behind any film is the marketing and trailer driving it. Yes, it helps to have a loyal fan base but there are always people still discovering it, no matter if its on it 5th or 6th movie. Additionally, people are skeptical with each new release, because of the downward trend most films have historically taken as movie studios provide less skilled writers, directors, and smaller production budgets for sequels. The source material can be amazing but that does not automatically translate into an awesome movie, or do I need to remind you of Starship Troopers?
