Whitney Houston's 'The Bodyguard' Coming Back to Theaters. Which Films Would You Like to See on the Big Screen Again?

Precious few entertainers are able to leave their mark on both the music and movie industries. Yet when Whitney Houston passed away recently, pop music and film fans felt a void that they’re still figuring out how to fill.  

Tributes have been carried out across various formats, most notably Jennifer Hudson’s stirring performance of “I Will Always Love You” at the Grammy Awards hours after Houston’s death. Now film fans are being given the chance to revisit the motion picture that made Houston’s song such a massive hit. 
 
In celebration of its 20th anniversary, The Bodyguard will return to theaters for an exclusive, one-night-only event scheduled for Wednesday, March 28. The screening is being sponsored by NCM Fathom and Warner Bros. While also marking the anniversary of the Houston and Kevin Costner collaboration, it simultaneously acts as a tribute to the late singer’s successful movie career. The screening also coincides with the March 27 release of The Bodyguard on Blu-ray, boasting an “I Will Always Love You” music video, a making-of documentary, and more. The Bodyguard’s return, however, also solidifies a trend of old movies coming back to theaters for high-profile, limited-engagement runs. 
 
On March 1, Paramount Pictures and Cinemark brought Francis Ford Coppola’s The Godfather back to 55 Cinemark XD locations across the country. They’ll do the same with The Godfather: Part II on April 19, according to reports. Classic-movie buffs also might want to circle Wednesday, March 21, on the calendar, as Turner Classic Movies and Fathom plan to re-release Casablanca for one night only. (Get tickets here.)
 
Filmmakers aren't even necessarily diving that far back into Hollywood's film vaults. Recently, Disney brought a 3D cut of The Lion King back to theaters. George Lucas did the same with Star Wars: Episode 1 – The Phantom Menace. James Cameron’s about to follow suit with Titanic 3D. And AMC will bring back each Marvel movie leading up to The Avengers in one marathon showing. 
 
Does it make sense to bring old movies back to theaters? It seems that the answer’s “yes,” as Phantom Menace pulled in $42.8M during its recent run, and The Lion King led the box office charts for weeks when it opened last year. Audiences do want the ability to go back to a theater and experience certain movies with a crowd. There's the communal aspect of laughing, crying or cheering along with fellow fans. And certain films just play better on a theater screen

    Movies that most definitely need to be brought back to theaters: #1...The Crow (case closed) before they completely ruin and disgrace Brandon Lee's name by going through with the remake that absolutely nobody is supporting. #2...Stephen King's IT #3...What's Eating Gilbert Grape #4...Tropic Thunder #5...Sucker Punch #6...The Terminator #8...To Kill A Mockingbird (but have it be the high def blu-ray version) #9...Poltergeist #10...Alien 1-Resurrection #11...The Godfather Trilogy (which technically they are sort of doing already). #12...A Clockwork Orange

    I'm all for bringing old movies & not-so-old movies back to the silver screen. I will go back to watch Titanic & all of the Star Wars movies.

    Agreed about Whitney Houston. This would be a real tribute. In terms of other movies, how about Dirty Dancing? Think it's the 25th anniversary this year...

    This would be a great way to honor Whitney Houston. She was a Great Singer/Actress and there will never be another one like her. Her death was too soon.

    The Girl with the dragon tattoo 2011 American, and 2009 swedish. The girl who played with fire swedish, and The girl who kicked the hornets nest swedish. Well, I've only seen the american one in theaters. I would love to see the swedish ones in theaters.
