LOGIN, AMIGO!
A little while ago, Variety reported that James Cameron’s Avatar had grossed $77.3 million over the weekend, which is up from the $72 million originally reported. Why is that a big deal? Well, because it means the film has now beaten I Am Legend ($77.2 million) for the best ever December weekend opening. These numbers come despite the fact that there was a major snow storm on the East Coast that kept a lot of people away from theaters.

I thought that the special effects were amazing and the 3D made you feel like you were there on Pandora with the characters. That being said the storyline was not very original and has been done many times. Some of the lines were also corny but that can be expected from a big Sci-Fi movie like this.

this was a fantastic movie! my family ranging in ages from 7-75 loved this film and we were sad to have to leave the theater . The storyline although not original was still beautiful and more than one eye was in need of kleenex in the theater. The 3D was truly amazing and my youngest kept trying to touch things. The avatars were amazing and so realistic that my kids really want there to be a true Pandora and my daughter's wish is to be blue and fly like Jake Sully. At the end of the film the entire packed movie theater gave a standing ovation. This is the best sci fi movie in a very long time and we hope for sequels. In fact we are going to see the movie again before Christmas - well done Mr. Cameron - well done indeed

The movie was great. I do not think the theme is cliché. In fact, I think the usage of the word cliché is cliché in and of itself. The reason being that the idea that humans are not the center of the universe could do the world a lot of good. Throw enough mud at the wall and some of it is bound to stick. The graphics were amazing - I only wish the theaters wouldn't make you buy glasses every time you went to go see a 3d movie. Seems a little outlandish if you already have a pair to buy another... what a waste.

The animation and special effects really are exceptional - I was especially impressed by how lifelike they were able to make the blue people (in contrast with older CGI animation that often seems dead and mechanical.) However, the plot and acting are very weak, and I actually found myself laughing at how corny the writing was. Its a shame for there to be such a disconnect between the technical brilliance and the third-rate script, plot, and acting

Third-rate script, plot, and acting? Sound like you went in with preconceived ideas and looked for anything that would fulfill them. Does the movie borrow from other movies? One can make a strong argument...but those movies borrowed their ideas from historical events, so Cameron is just doing what they did. The plot is relatively simple to keep our heads from exploding from all the originality that went into bringing Pandora to life. The acting WAS NOT 3RD RATE! I just have to flat out disagree with you. Most of these actors have won awards or critical acclaim for previous work...and it shows in this movie.

The movie was great the colors, and the action was great. I animals were so life like, I loved it and will see it again. I liked the plot and some of the actors were old ones but good ones. It was a plot like alot of movies. Humans find something we want and then we try to take. I guess that what made the movie so believe able.

soSo- when chinese took over millions of others -oh I guess you never read of that? Oh wait ,Arabs from Saudi Arabia swept west, North , south and east and took over a third of the world? I guess they don't teach that in your school? Do you know the brutality in which the South Americans caused their neighbors to be extinct???? If you don't GO BACK TO A REAL SCHOOL you self hating individual. I'm sick of this 'white' bashing idiots (i'm Indian from Mumby not 'white') but I am also a history teacher. Oh and what the tribes did to one another in Africa? they sold their neighbors to slavery? oh they don't teach you that either. Get Lost!
LMAO Dial down the drama there pal.....this is an AVATAR board, I was referring to the AVATAR movie.
WIthout question the best CGI movie of history to date! This story, depth of thinking, and blend of action, raw emotion, and immeasurable creativity exceeds anything I have ever seen...move over Lord of the Rings...there's a new show in town!

Briliant with out a doubt. From the first trailers, I was prepared for a let down for the CGI, but it is incredible what James Cameron has done. I would recomend anyone who wants to see it, make sure to go 3D. As for plot line, after onehundred years of moveis, do you realy think there could ever be a truly original idea? You are a fool if you do. As for the bashing of the sript and lines? Unless you have a PHD, why bother analyzing it, you just make yourself sound stupid. It is fantasy science fiction after all and Cameron can write better than Lucas. The time moves freely and I found myself amazed that it went by so fast for such a long movie. Don't analyze it, just sit back and enjoy it.
Spot on dude! I feel sorry for all these soul crushed people who ruin a wonderful experience for themselves by overanalyzing this movie. BEST MOVIE OF MY LIFETIME =)

I agree, what movie is ever truly original? Were great movies such as LOTR, the Dark Knight, Ironman, etc. original? Those movies originated from novels/comic books/etc. Although the plot was predictable, I agree in that there was a message in this movie similar to message found in prior ones such as Pocahontas, Dances with Wolves, and Last of the Mohicans. The graphics are unprecedented and the message is clear about power, greed, and usurpation going head on against nature. Kudos to Cameron calling this move an allegory to the Euro invasion of the New World

I really enjoyed it. The story is very similar to one that's been told several times (Pocahontas), but that's not something people should look at and discredit the film with. The story is entertaining, has a message, and delivers great action, suspense, and even romance. For a guy, I have to admit, the whole thing was a nice combination of all the elements that make a great enjoyable film. All stories have been told before, what's important is telling them well and in different ways. James Cameron did just that with Avatar. Good job. If you want another really good example of an entertaining film that isn't just trash cinema like the majority of crap out there, watch District 9. Comes out tomorrow on DVD!

I never got to see Star Wars in the 70's and feel the shock and awe that enveloped the world. But I must say, this is Star Wars for my generation, and better. My jaw was dropped throughout the entire movie. From the very second the movie starts till the last second I was in absolute amazement. Enough has been said about the CGI, but rest assured this level of detail and animation is 5 years ahead of its time. The performance by Zoe Saldana as Neytiri was breathtaking. Her facial expressions and grace was incredible and worthy of a Oscar. I'm 22 and feel like I'm 12 after seeing this. I've seen it twice in 3D and hope to make the trip to San Francisco for the IMAX. It is a privilege to see art like this. I commend you Jim!

I saw Avatar in 3D and IMAX. I thought the world the makers created was outstanding. The plants and animals (and the people) were also inventive and very creative. The story was predictable, though. Even so I couldn't wait to see the predictable happen. I recommend it in 3D and IMAX.

The technical aspects were good and kudos to Zoe Saldana for making the alien language convincing. The story was a blend of Pocahontas and Dances with Wolves. Overall, a flop, and not even an impressive flop like Santa Claus Conquers the Martians.

A flop are you crazy did you just sleep during the movie this has to be the best movie every.wake up and go see it again that what I going to do.
James Cameron never fully developed the characters that had so much potential. Unfortunately I didn't like the plot - oh well, there will be other movies. This isn't the last movie that will ever be made. Mr. Cameron is still alive, he will make more movies and I look forward to it. This is not Mr. Cameron's best, again oh well, it didn't ruin my life nor my opinion should ruin your feelings about this movie. Like I said, the technical aspects and Zoe Saldana were good. I will watch Inglourious Basterds and District 9 again thank you very much. That's the beauty of the film industry, there is something for everyone because there are so many projects in production world wide.
Is the 2D that much different from the 3D to pay extra for?

It's the best movie of the year, and a breath of fresh air after all that CGI crap like G-Force or Transformers 2, that give you a headache. Avatar is possibly the best Sci-fi movie of the year. 2009 was a good year for Sci-fi, District 9, Star Trek, Moon, and Avatar. The 3D was amazing, already seen it twice, but I might see it in IMAX 3D again! Buying on Blu-Ray when it comes out! One of the best movies I've ever seen. And that's saying something, I pretty hard to impress.

This movie was fantastic, CGI and all. The acting was great, the message of the movie was right on point, and James Cameron outdid himself with the graphics. I plan to see it again in 3D, just to see everything pop even more than it did without. It will move you and leave you in awe. Also, the action is awesome and you will find yourself cheering and crying.

I saw it on opening day and I had to go back again the very next day! IT WAS AWESOME! Good vs. Evil, love and hate, environment vs progress/greed, the movie had a lot to offer. I thought the plot was a take-off on Disney's POCAHONTIS, but at a more adult level. I still had to watch it from the very beginning, frame by frame! I was glued to the movie and sad to leave the theater. I would LOVE to see some outtakes! The CGI was so NEW and dramatic! Congrats to Mr. Cameron on his story and his film developement. I CAN'T WAIT FOR THE SEQUEL(S)!!!
