Weekend Chatter: Early 'Avengers' Reviews Hit, But Can Critics Change Your Mind on a Blockbuster?

By: Sean OConnell on April 20, 2012 at 7:02AM Comments (18)

The press embargo on Joss Whedon’s The Avengers broke Friday, a full two weeks before the movie opens wide on May 4. Normally studios are furious when critics publish early reviews. Marvel Studios and Walt Disney Pictures, however, likely will be thrilled with the raves being dished out by embargo-busting press.

The Hollywood Reporter might have been the first leak, posting Todd McCarthy’s favorable Avengers review. He writes, “It's hard to imagine that anyone with an appetite for the trademark's patented brand of fantasy, effects, mayhem and strangely dressed he-men will be disappointed. … Director Joss Whedon has adroitly balanced the celebrity circus to give every single one of the superstar characters his or her due."

Variety’s Justin Chang chimes in, “Marvel's cinematic master plan for its comicbook all-stars pays off in extravagant fashion with The Avengers. Like a superior, state-of-the-art model built from reconstituted parts, Joss Whedon's buoyant, witty and robustly entertaining superhero smash-up is escapism of a sophisticated order, boasting a tonal assurance and rich reserves of humor that offset the potentially lumbering and unavoidably formulaic aspects of this 143-minute team-origin story.”

Countless more reviews will continue to flood the Web over the weekend. If you want to read them, they’ll be easy to find.

I’m choosing to stay far away from early reviews, so as to preserve what little surprise remains for Whedon’s Avengers, a film that has been heavily scrutinized since the first day of production. Don’t you want to be a little bit surprised when you finally sit down in a theater on May 4 to enjoy the film Whedon has assembled?

But that’s not today’s question. I’d rather know this: Do reviews influence your decision to see a blockbuster like The Avengers? If the reviews hitting the Internet were negative, would they change your mind about potentially seeing this mighty Marvel event? Or are you going, regardless, and will happily make up your own mind?

It’s an interesting debate. Every major outlet has to review The Avengers. But are they creating any additional buzz for a film that has saturated the market with awareness. There are a number of summer movies fighting for attention that will need critical support to build a fan base and potentially increase their audience size. The Avengers probably isn’t one of them.

So tell us, do early reviews for massive summer blockbusters like The Avengers affect your decision? Could negative reviews for a film like Avengers, The Dictator, Battleship or – Heaven forbid – The Dark Knight Rises affect your decision to see it in theaters? Or when it comes to the Summer Movie Season, is it just, “Pass the popcorn and cue up the special effects,” regardless of what critics have to say. We’d love to hear your thoughts!

I never listen to critics because it take zero talent to be one and there is a endless supply of them .and anybody can post a review right after the movie so. if they are looking for a b-title 1930s french movie with subs wi wi.. they should not be at a avengers flick.i will be seeing this movie regardless.maybe even twice.

Some of my faviorte movies have been criically panned, ie Joe Dirt. There have also been movies that have gotten great reviews that I have not cared for. If there is a movie out that I want to see I will see it regardless of the reviews. I wish I would have listened to them before going to see Silent House.

I read a few reviews and sometimes make a decision based on those reviews. It really depends on the movie. Some I don't really care what the reviews say, I just want to go and be entertained. I mostly go to movies if they are going to be big and loud, worth paying the money because the effects are cool. If it's something that will show just fine on my flat screen at home, then I don't bother going to the theater.

To me it really doesnt matter about what the audience says about a movie rather if it is good or bad. My point is your opinion about something is your opinion.

Professional critics should be shot on sight. Until someone can clone my mind and put it (along with all of my likes and dislikes) into another person, I avoid critics' opinions like the plague.

Imagine being an adult and making your living watching movies? How pathetic! On top of that, being a professional critic means that you have the audacity to think that your entirely subjective opinion is "right" or somehow superior to the average moviegoer.

When it comes to horror, Sci Fi and fantasy movies, the average critic does not know his *** from his elbow. I've seen 1000s of movies and if I had listened to the critics, I wouldn't have seen hundreds of great movies. (Go check out the trashing of the original Terminator movie by the 1984 critics to see what I mean.)

Also I never let critics sway what I see, yes maybe a horrible review might make me rethink seeing it opening night in favor for my second choice, but I will still see it and when it comes to blockbusters and superhero films there will always be some old bitter old woman who has no idea whats going on and will hate it.

I usually completely ignore reviewers/critics until after I've watched a movie, if I even check at that point. In my opinion, "critics" have this horrible disconnect, where anything that is obviously gunning for an Oscar for Best Director/Screenplay/Actor-Actress is a good movie, and anything going for an Oscar for Best Visual Effects/Best Summer Action movie, or anything that's not even trying to win an award is a bad movie. These critics can shove their overblown sense of self worth up their own @$$. Reviewers at least seem to be able to give a movie its dues when it's enjoyable. I prefer to gauge movies by customer/reader reviews, to see if they were expecting to enjoy it (their kind of movie) or not. People being paid can't be trusted.

love to hear reactions and opinions good or bad, but I will watch The Avengers or any other film that sparks my interest no matter what, but the more good reviews the merrier, especially for something to show those darn people you want to bring to the movies for a good time that do get influenced by reviews.

i think it always depends on how the movie looks. There are some movies like The Avengers that I'm planning to see no matter what some of my favorite critics say. But there's others where I'm not really sure about it so I wait till the reviews. I don't think reviews affect movies that much when it comes to big, loud, annoying summer movies (take Transformers DOTM for example, made so much last year but there were so many negative reviews (it did suck alittle))

The movie Haywire got good reviews from critics but that movie was a piece of s!!!! such a boring waste of 2 hours of my life. I will watch Avengers regardless of good or bad reviews.
