At first glance, The Monuments Men may look and feel like a war-time version of The Ocean's Eleven trilogy that George Clooney and Matt Damon were part of rebooting a decade ago, but this time around, the story is based on a true events.
The story centers on a ragtag group of museum directors, curators and art historians tasked by President Franklin Roosevelt to go into Germany and rescue artistic masterpieces from Nazi thieves. It sounds like an impossible mission, but that's what makes the journey compelling to watch. Also, it features Bill Murray and John Goodman together.
Clooney cowrote, produced and starred in the World War II-era drama which has been subject to some quiet awards buzz all year long. Now we finally get a look:
The cast looks rather entertaining and also includes Cate Blanchett, who is earning award buzz for her performance in Woody Allen's Blue Jasmine, with Oscar-winner Jean Dujardin (The Artist) costarring. Is this an awards-season contender? For one thing, never bet against Clooney, a filmmaker who almost consistently manages to pilot his awards-season films to Oscar night.
The Monuments Men arrives in theaters December 18. What are your thoughts on this first trailer?
Speaking of Oscar contenders, Tom Hanks has been on a bit of a dry spell. He hasn't been nominated since 2001 and hasn't won since Forrest Gump. With two projects (the other is the Walt Disney biopic Saving Mr. Banks) generating buzz, that wait might be coming to an end.
While the teaser trailer for hijack thriller Captain Phillips focused on the tense action sequences, this first full-length trailer takes a quieter approach, but still manages to amp up the level of tension. This time around, we get to see a lot more new footage, including the role of the Navy as well as more interaction between Phillips and the "I'm the captain now" pirate leader.
Do you think Hanks has a shot of earning an Oscar nomination for his performance in this film?
Captain Phillips arrives in theaters October 11.
