'Top Gun' Returning to Theaters in 3D

By: Erik Davis on September 13, 2011 at 10:27AM Comments (6)

While we await the re-releases of Star Wars and Titanic in 3D, another iconic film has decided to put itself through the conversion machine in order to return to theaters in the third dimension. Yup, Tony Scott's 1986 flick about elite fighter pilots who play by their own rules is being converted to 3D for a re-release in early 2012, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Legend 3D, who handled the 3D work on films like Transformers: Dark of the Moon, Green Lantern, Conan the Barbarian, The Smurfs and more, is facilitating the conversion. Their CEO, Rob Hummel, claims the film "lends itself to 3D due to the aerial flight," though we think the volleyball scene is really where it's at. Who wouldn't want to watch a bunch of shirtless hunks spiking their balls in our faces in 3D?

No confirmed release date (or length of run) confirmed yet for Top Gun 3D, though we'll keep you in the loop. In the meantime ...

AS much I love this movie and the actors who starred in it . . . This is the lamest, stupidest, most money-driven antic i have seen to date. Really?? These highly-overpaid movie executives cannot come up with an original idea if their Lamborghini depended on it. I would not buy, rent it or watch it. I love this movie - leave well enough alone and boycott this kind of crappy remake "crap". Make these over paid punks earn their money - - - The studios need to work on focus groups again with REAL people as to get an idea in their pea-brains what we are wiling to watch and pay for. Gee, you think?

wow, let's take a film that is already looks like it was shot on crappy film stock. try to digital reprocess that, then convert it to "fake 3d". Also take something that really looks bad in 3d, Fast Motion, What's the point of this... I know I know it's a lame money grab.

I really hope no one goes and watches any of these movies, SO THEY WILL STOP MAKING THEM.

Sorry I should have added 3D to that last statement.

I put this under 'unnecessary 3D re-releases. OTOH, I'd love to see this released for D-Box motion seats at the same time. D-Box would be a natural fit for Top Gun.

There is nothing thrilling about 3D. I know I am speaking for myself but I really wish the 3D movies would go away. They are nothing but big disappointments. Top Gun a great classic movie, it would be ruin by 3D to re-release in theaters. The same goes for Titanic and Star Wars. Star Wars would be great on the IMAX but 3D would ruin the illusion of movie magic. Again, I speak for myself I do not know how others feel about this subject. I know I am always complaining about 3D but is not good for the eye sight. 3D movies is not good for your health.
