Tony Scott Talks Up 'Top Gun 2': It Won't Be a Remake

By: Erik Davis on October 25, 2010 at 1:41PM Comments (10)

Last time we brought up the recent Top Gun 2 news, a whole bunch of you (53 to be exact) chimed in with your thoughts on whether we even want (or need) a Top Gun sequel. A lot of you were strongly against any sort of reboot or reimagining, which is good because director Tony Scott doesn't want a reboot or reimagining either.

Tom Cruise

Speaking to HitFix while out promoting Unstoppable, Scott confirmed that he will direct, though at the same time admitted that there isn't even a script yet. That script, whenever it does arrive, will probably solidify whether or not Tom Cruise will actually reprise the role of Maverick in some capacity. So if Scott doesn't want a reboot or a reinvention, what exactly will this film be about? He notes, "I'm not waiting for a script. I'm going to do my homework. I'm going down to I think it's Fallon, Nevada, down near New Mexico and it's a whole different world now. These computer geeks -- these kids play war games in a trailer in Fallon, Nevada, and if we ever went to war or were in the Middle East or the Far East or wherever it is, these guys can actually fly drones.  They are unmanned aircraft.  They operate them and then they party all night."

Sure, it's interesting that these guys hole up in a tent and can fly unmanned planes halfway around the world, but where's the action in that? Perhaps they're somehow thrust into action when equipment fails, or maybe the film won't be an action movie and instead will focus on the relationships these guys have with each other and their families? How Cruise would fit into all this we do not know, but at least this is confirmation that a Top Gun sequel is very much in the works as we speak.

Reading Scott's thoughts on the sequel, do you support it or think it's a waste of time?

Russian naval forces (mostly subs and destroyers) are moving on the East and blocking the US from return their vessels to defend our land. The Russian carriers are positioning near DC and GA and send their planes to start the air raids against the different strategic points (DC, Pentagon, Naval and Air bases around MD and VA, communication bldgs, etc). England, Israel and France joins us in the ME scenario, allowing us to release part of our forces back to help defend our land.Maverick and Ice are late to destroy the sub that launches a nuke to destroy DC. DC is wiped out. End of Top Gun part 2...

What the heck! Let's make it more complicated! This is like RISK in a movie. China pretended to be in cold war with Russia but underground MidEaster, China, and Russian leaders were meeting to plot the attack to US soil. They used the drone incident as a diversion. While we sent our forces to position and start a massive attack in the ME (Middle East), China mobilized their forces in the Pacific with the excuse that they were planning to attack Russia on their east corridor, but it was to gain position advantage in the west coast of US. By the time we realized it was all a trick our forces in US soil are thinned and mostly located in the ME. Russia invades Alaska and attacks the northwest while China is already into LA, and moving East.

We can add another hero on the East (maybe "Ice" Kilmer?) where at the peak of the movie they have to fight together to avoid DC from being wiped out! They are fighting in two different scenarios (West and East) until the final. In one of the scenes Maverick gets to a fight late and Las Vegas is destroyed. Why was he late? He spend the night with some foxy lady (romance section) who he shouldn't be involved with in first time (double wammy).

Here is the movie... The enemy (China) has sent middle eastern terrorists to sabotage our drones centers with dirty bombs (EMP's). The damage is so bad it would take months to re-establish the basics to start using the drones again. No one knows that China was behind but all think it was the Middle east In the meanwhile China sent their Navy and they reached our coasts and mayhem is created. First time we have a war in our soil and Marines are the first to engage over seas and over land to intercept the attack from different points. Maverick is called into action to defend the west coast territories (fight & destruction shots over Rushmore, Colo Canyon, DC, NY, Yellowstone, Las Vegas, others over seas, as possible scenarios)

Top Gun is my all-time favorite movie. It can't be beat by a sequel, remake, nor reimaging and dear Lord, please don't do a 3-D movie!! I would love to have a movie that my kids can grow watching and still love as an adult....

I support it if it will focus on air fighting in the middle east. The idea of UAVs failing and then needing the "old boys" to step in and fly is great.

I support it as long as it is done well. I'm one of many die-hard Top Gun fans, but I'm not close-minded. If they don't make it political, sentimental, or a nigh-on mirror-image of the first movie, they'll be fine. There is a lot of potential for a well-made sequel.
