'Star Wars' Movies to Be Re-Released in 3D Starting in 2012

By: Erik Davis on September 29, 2010 at 12:38PM Comments (198)

You knew this was bound to happen eventually, since it's been something we've been talking about for years. Yes, fans, George Lucas and LucasFilm have announced that beginning in 2012, they'll be re-releasing all six Star Wars films in theaters in 3D. The plan right now is to release one film per year, beginning with Episode I: The Phantom Menace.

"Star Wars"

Naturally, hardcore fans (and haters of all things George Lucas) have jumped at the chance to bash this decision, calling it nothing but a cash-grab (ie: way to make even more money off the franchise), though I don't think people realize the potential here. Sure, it all depends on the conversion process, which LucasFilm claims will be a lot better than what we've seen from previous converted films.

But if they somehow manage to make these films look good in 3D, just think about how many iconic scenes will look awesome in three dimensions. So much of Star Wars was filmed as if Lucas knew they would eventually be converted to 3D – with huge battle sequences and massive landscapes. Just think about how wild Luke's final flight to destroy the Death Star in A New Hope would look in 3D, or the opening battle scene in Empire Strikes Back. Heck, even the Darth Maul fight at the end of Phantom Menace would look pretty sweet.

So, yeah, I guess you can bash Lucas all you want, but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't welcoming these 3D conversions with open arms.

What about you? Will you see the new 3D films, or have you wasted enough money on this franchise over the years?

If the investment and collaboration with Pixar proved anything, it was that George Lucas has always been a true visionary. 1977 audiences saw this whole new opening sequence with jaw-dropping amazement. And Lucas held off on filming Episode 1 until "... the technology could do the film justice". For my part, I sometimes wonder if George Lucas maybe came from a Long Long Time Ago in a Galaxy Far Far Away and brought with him the knowledge of technologies we have yet to discover... With 3D TV's now hitting the market and 5.2 Home Theater systems, not only will this move be a stoke of brilliance to introduce the films to a whole new generation, but it will be an essential staple of Home Video Libraries for the next 3 decades!

Won't be there. Fool me once (or three times) shame on you. Fool me twice (or 6 more times) shame on me. I might be willing to see episodes 7-9 but George won't get a penny of mine for 3D.

My first, instinctual reaction would be to scream Nooooooo......given how horribly he mucked up the "enhancements" when Lucas re-released episodes IV, V and VI for the hi-def DVD. However, I think back to the week episode IV premiered and tranported us all permanently into a new era of cinematic entertainment. When that battle cruiser came "overhead" and just-kept-coming, with Dolby surround sound vibrating the seats, we felt as if it was actually overhead and all of us were aware that we were experiencing something that had never been experienced before. To see THAT in 3D would be worth the price of a ticket. I just hope he can brighten up the images. Don't let the 3D glasses smother the image they way they did to Pixar's "UP".

I would see this digitally remastered on the big screen, but idk about the whole 36D thing on this. I wouldn't necessarily call myself a purist, but I think it will mess it up.

All movies are cash grabs. Duh. Movie makers are putting out the same garbage over and over anyway. Might as well get to see the good stuff in 3D!

I think that everyone needs to calm down. First off, if you don't like the idea, don't see the movies. Second, Lucas is known for cashing in on hype. The trilogy is coming to blu-ray, which everyone wanted. I personally have not seen Empire and Jedi at a theater, and I will be glad to finally enjoy them. When I was at Celebration V there was still a huge fan base for the movies, and I am not surprised that Lucas would want to increase it by re-releasing the movies.

I'm pretty skeptical when it comes to anything Lucas does with the original trilogy. However, my Son is going to be an 8 year-old when "A New Hope" appears on the big screen in 3D - how could I deny him that experience and the chance to see it with him? He's a huge fan of "Clone Wars" right now. My only complaint is that we have to sit through the garbage that is eps. 1-3 before we see the original trilogy...

Are you aware that Episodes I-III were better critically received than IV-VI? Their rottentomato.com aggregate scores are illuminating, and I personally find them to be much more rich, probably because of all the exposition they contain. They're like Wagnerian opera and Greek Tragedy all rolled up into one!

Thanks. I hope you and your son enjoy seeing A New Hope together on the big screen; I can't wait to have that same experience of taking my daughter, who'll finally be old enough to enjoy them.

I am very eager to see the films converted to 3D and believe that Lucas and all involved will do a much better job than anyone has to date. There is huge potential for 3D in the Star Wars saga. Audiences that have never seen Star Wars on the big screen will finally be able to. That is a GREAT reason to be doing this. Just as Lucas revived Hollywood and theater attendance in the 70s with the first Star Wars film, the new versions will remind audiences what great storytelling on an epic scale looks like. We all know that Lucas likes to tweak his work again and again, and he's not the only one who has re-released his movies over the years. There is nothing wrong with rediscovering films that millions of people already love.

As long as it keeps EMPIRE LUCAS on top I am all for it... Complain about 3-D and not paying for cash grabs, but personally if someone's gonna get me to turn over my hard earned cash it's gonna be George Lucas. I love all his movies, and Star Wars is the pinnacle of the pile for me. I AM THERE, and everyone ele should be too....search your feelings...you know this to be true.lol

You are absolutely right Lumendelsol.....and your last line....perfect. Even if it was said by Obi-Wan Kenobee first. "For my ally is the Force, and a powerful ally it is. Life creates it, makes it grow. Its energy surrounds us and binds us. Luminous beings are we, not this crude matter. You must feel the Force around you; here, between you, me, the tree, the rock, everywhere, yes.” If this includes a 3D re-visit tot eh Star Wars francise....I am so there!

Smart idea on Lucas' part.... great way to lead into the next trilogy, Episodes 7, 8 and 9, which will start in 2021. Yes, the sequel trilogy is happening. It's not a rumor.

There is no 7,8,9 coming and if Lucas does try and milk his cash cow with another trilogy it better not have any of the characters we already know and love in it. This poart of the story is DONE. OVER DONE, time to breathe some new life into the SWU. Do a film about some characters from KOTOR, that would be great.

Lucas waited 16 years between ROTJ and TPM, and said he'd wait another 16 between ROTS and Episode 7 for three reasons: The first is out of tradition. The second is to introduce the Star Wars universe to a new generation of people, and the third is to give enough time for special effects technology to advance. Thanks to Cameron's Avatar, it has. You can visit the only Lucas'-approved website regarding all things Star Wars, including the sequel trilogy, at ***SuperShadow.com

You are a true idiot (or you are "SuperShadow") if you believe anything on that website. George Lucas himself has PUBLICLY announced that SuperShadow.com is not affiliated or supported by him or any other LucasArts employee. Lucas as also REPEATEDLY stated that he has no plans of producing a third trilogy. And finally: every "spoiler" he gave on that site regarding Episode II (for which he claimed to have a full copy of the shooting script (which Lucas had not finished writing at the time of the claim)) was 100% wrong.
