You knew this was bound to happen eventually, since it's been something we've been talking about for years. Yes, fans, George Lucas and LucasFilm have announced that beginning in 2012, they'll be re-releasing all six Star Wars films in theaters in 3D. The plan right now is to release one film per year, beginning with Episode I: The Phantom Menace.
Star Wars, 3-D, George Lucas
Fanboy Fix, 3D
Looks like Maggie1956 and I were having a mind meld.. oh wait... that's that other series... :)
I am a diehard Star Wars fan! My husband and I were dating when the original three came out and we traveled to New York City to the grand opening and 21 shows later to watch what is now New Hope.
We truly look forward to viewing them in 3D and we have passed on our enjoyment of George
Lucas's work to one of our sons who is 20 now and also looks forward to them. We are going
to start saving our pennies now, so that when they come out in 2012 we can see the all from
the beginning once again!
I wouldn't say I've "wasted enough money on this franchise" over the years, but i sure have wasted enough money on 3D. I think the push to 3D is the scourge of the film industry. There are very few movies that actually benefit from being put out in 3D and so many that are noticeably worse when pushed out in that format that it seems the only reason to push 3D is to rape us for another $3-5 for yet another pair of the cheap plastic glasses (which despite the push to "recycle" them, theaters patently refuse to let the consumer use a previously purchased pair).
I'll be glad when 3D dies the inevitable death it has coming. I just hope it doesn't take the industry down with it.
There is a great article by Roger Ebert on 3D. I agree w/you and him!
Star Wars is my kinda crack I will definetly pay to go see these and take my 2 daughters to see these movies that have ment so much to me my entire life!
My concern Is that they're releasing them once a year, and they're starting with arguably the worst of the whole damn franchise. That said it means a 5 year wait for the original trilogy to be released, which is what I would say most fans want to see anyway. Why do one a year? Why not once a quarter. When the Special Edition Trilogy came out in 97, the three films had one month intervals. While I think that rushes it a bit, a film every three months keeps it pretty fresh in people's minds, and doesn't force such a long wait upon people who abhor episodes 1-3.
Heck yeah i'm going to see it...I stood in line to see the first 3 and was taken by my older sister and brother to see the originals when I was little..I will for sure see it in 3-D...Lucas could make it out of this world.
The writer ison point though... the scene where Luke flys down into the cannon caverns to destroy the Death Star WILL be TIGHT!!!!
*It will make a ton of money, kinda burnt out on the whole 3-D thing but if anyone can do this right it is Lucas and the team and Industrial Light and Magic.
I have been a fan my whole life!!
personally, i'd rather see him do the last 3 movies. (7, 8 and 9)
I can understand re-re-releasing the movies, but putting them in 3D is nothing more than a cash grab, especially in this economy. Considering that theaters charge what, an extra $5 just for a movie being in 3D? It's a cash grab not only Lucas's part, but also on the individual theaters parts as well. I doubt I will be seeing them.
They have to be seen, iconic !!!!
Being transported back to my adolescence the same way that I was when I saw the re-release in the 90's in theaters is almost emotional for me. When I went back to see the movies I had the same feelings that I did when I was a kid. If you are a purist, you wouldn't even watch them in a typical home theater, even with a 60" screen. I can almost feel the adrenal rush in the theater!
What a great IDEA!!! I hope they do a good job on the 3D... But what I would love to see is a total remake of Star Wars.... Before you all go crazy just think about what we are losing out on? We alway will have the orginals. What Goerge Lucas could do with a fantastic story line like Star Wars with todays technology.... I think it would be amazing and for those that have an open mind I think you would agree....
I have been waiting for this to happen for a long time now. I knew when I read all the technical specs surrounding the first movies then the second set of movies that he sooooo did the work with this in mind. So happy!!! :D
I don't care what the reason is. I love the original movies and watch them on tv every chance I get. I haven't seen them on the big screen since I was a kid and would love the chance to see them up there again.
Lets see how many new BS CGI things he ads to the films now. This cash cow needs to die, and this is coming from a guy with a 7ft Darth Vader in his living room. Fans don't get much more hardcore then me.
If they would let you buy the 3D glasses and reuse them for every 3D movie. I would be fine.
At my theatre, they make us pay extra for the glasses and at the end, they ask us to "recycle" them, i.e., put them in this big bin on the way out of the theatre. Now, I'm all for recycling. But I want my money back if they want to reuse the same glasses over and over and make more money off of them. We get deposits back for soda cans and pedal boat rentals. Why not 3-D glasses.
bring them on!!!
2012............isn't their anything more current to discuss? Who cares what is going to be released in 2012 when we are in 2010.
I'm probably the wrong person to ask, as I haven't seen a 3-D film in over thirty years. I haven't seen a single one of the big-ticket recent movies in 3-D, including _Avatar_. So I'm not planning to stumble over myself to see _Star Wars_ in this format.
That said, I could see shelling out the bucks to see the original _Star Wars_ (i.e., _A New Hope_) in 3-D only because--as the article says--the final battle against the Death Star would look great, as would many other scenes. I could also see watching the speeder chase on Endor in _ROTJ_ that way. Otherwise, not interested. George has enough (of my) money.
I am a Star Wars fan for sure and will enjoy much higher resolution in picture quality, however I have a vision problem and 3D just doesn't do well with me. Unfortunately even in 3D the picture would still have a 2D look.
My first reaction to this was to roll my eyes. It's definitely for the money. It's probably also a way to introduce new fans (only familiar with the Clone Wars cartoons) to the movies. The more I think about it though, I have to admit that I'm a little excited about the possibility for my (now 1 year old) son to see Star Wars on the big screen.
ITS A TOTAL CASH GRAB BUT I WILL BE THERE FOR EACH MOVIE. And yes i'm a hardcore fan!!!
"Welcome to the party, pal."
"I am serious... and don't call me Shirley."
"When am I gonna learn how to punch?"
"These go to eleven."
"Benjamin, have you ever been severely beaten about the face & neck?"
"Just keep swimming, swimming, swimming."
"You're gonna need a bigger boat."
"Jessica's got cable."
