Sound Off is a weekly theater-related discussion post here at Fandango where we talk about the past, present and future of moviegoing.
It wouldn't feel like October without a familiar horror franchise churning out another sequel. With its fourth installment arriving in theaters this weekend, it has now become a tradition where we expect a new Paranormal Activity in theaters every Halloween. Before Paranormal Activity, it was the Saw franchise, and after Paranormal Activity? Well, maybe they'll start remaking the Saw movies, or the Friday the 13th movies. Or perhaps we'll see a completely new series take over October.
How long will it be before the Paranormal Activity movies run out of steam? Well, that's up to you. If you keep seeing them, they'll keep making them -- but at some point it'll run its course, and if it were up to you to decide its replacement, what would you pick? An old horror franchise, an existing horror franchise, or something completely new?
That's our discussion topic this week. I want to know which horror movie (or franchise) you'd like to see producing sequels every October. If you're happy with Paranormal Activity, then by all means go with that as your pick. Tell the powers that be to keep making them. But if you were in charge -- tasked with curating the October moviegoing experience for everyone each year -- what would you go with?

Childs Play, NOT done with some rock n roll, Rob Zombie flavor but the old way, could survive a few yrs. Stephen Kings IT is in the works but no exact release date as of yet. I just hope the new director doesn't butcher it. Michael Myers or Jason (without a cell phone) would do us justice, of course done by the right people. Look, horror isn't hard. I know a ton of kids today who LOVE the older stuff and despise all new crud being squeezed out because they followed a recipe. Give us another Michael, Jason, or Freddy without the teeny-boppers getting on our nerves and you've got yourself a sure hit. And what happened to all the horror directors? Back in the 80s they were getting all the love. Guess it's all about superheroes now...
Give us another kitchen knife wielding, chainsaw swinging, American nightmare in a mask so I don't feel gypped at the theater.
The original Halloween ... Best scary movie ever
Hellraiser for sure :)
oh yes, for sure. when my daughter was little, hellraiser was the only scarey movie that ever skeered her. she just couldnt handle pinhead, everytime she saw him she kept touching her face, it was funny. and, of course, the line that slayed her was "your suffering will be legendary, even in hell" lol.
Hellraiser all the way! If Clive Barker hadn't sold the rights to the fist one, the franchise would have been amazing with his visions.
If done right (not like the forthcoming sequel), Silent Hill could be a very lucrative and creepy franchise I feel.
I'd rather they make something new and inventive like Prometheus than remaking old horror movies...however, Freddy vs Jason 2 would be awesome.
How about a new Halloween Movie?
i really like Paranormal Activity 4 it was good and the ending was crayz
How about something along the lines of a stephen king. a Remake of Children of the Corn
or sinsister 2
Definitely the Scream franchise for me!!!! I was too young when the first 3 came out to see them in theaters, so I'd absolutely LOVE to see the first three Screams on the big screen, especially the first one as it is such a classic!!!! The Ring films would be good too! Saw the 2nd one in theaters, but I'd love to see the first one on the big screen!
have you seen the original Ringu? if not you should. the story makes more sense and they ended up making 4 films (includes a prequel called ringu 0)
Scream is playing at some AMC theatres...I just got an email about that a few days ago. Check amctheatres.com and put in your zip. It's not playing here, but I did seem them all 4 movies first run in theatres, so I guess it's ok.
would have loved 'SAW' but they killed off....whats his name again?
Every Halloween? Not really. I wouldn't mind seeing some of my childhood favorites make it to the Halloween season: Gremlins, Monster Squad, Ghostbusters, etc. Give me one good reboot every Halloween, that would be awesome.
Definitely Gremlins, and a revamped Monster Squad, but most of all (fingers crossed) they should start finally filming Ghostbusters 3 next summer.
The Scream Franchise !
Let's bring Critters back. Although I haven't watched it recently, I loved it as a kid. Ghosts, possessions, and slashers have their place, nothing beats an old fashion monster.
"Welcome to the party, pal."
"I am serious... and don't call me Shirley."
"When am I gonna learn how to punch?"
"These go to eleven."
"Benjamin, have you ever been severely beaten about the face & neck?"
"Just keep swimming, swimming, swimming."
"You're gonna need a bigger boat."
"Jessica's got cable."
