There's no question superhero movies are big business. Take The Avengers for example. The mash-up of Marvel superheroes is projected to open north of $130 million and make a serious run at topping The Hunger Games' opening weekend haul for tops in 2012.
So it makes sense that the studio which will bring us a rebooted origins story of The Amazing Spider-Man this year is looking for new properties to re-imagine.
Deadline reports that Sony Pictures is taking the '60s Archie Comics character Sabrina the Teenage Witch and turning her into a superhero. Yes, this is the same character played by Melissa Joan Hart in the sitcom version which ran from 1996-2003.
The live-action film will be an origin story in the vein of Spider-Man, about a young girl coming to terms with remarkable powers. Sony is hoping to use the brand power to launch a young, relatively unknown actress in the lead role.
Do you like the idea of taking this known property and turning it into a superhero movie? Are we headed down the road where the kids at Riverdale High (Archie, Jughead, etc.) will join in and form an Avengers-esque super squad?
"Welcome to the party, pal."
"I am serious... and don't call me Shirley."
"When am I gonna learn how to punch?"
"These go to eleven."
"Benjamin, have you ever been severely beaten about the face & neck?"
"Just keep swimming, swimming, swimming."
"You're gonna need a bigger boat."
"Jessica's got cable."
