Russell Crowe to Play Superman's Father, Jor-El

By: Erik Davis on June 15, 2011 at 12:27PM Comments (17)

Further proof that Zack Snyder's Man of Steel will tell some sort of origin story for Superman comes via Variety today as they report that Russell Crowe will play Superman's father, Jor-El, which was a role filled by Marlon Brando in the original Superman: The Movie. We don't know how big this role will be just yet, but it's an important enough part that Christopher Nolan specifically wanted, as Variety states, a "splashy marquee name" for Supes' biological father, who was a scientist on the planet Krypton prior to its destruction.

Seeing as Jor-El will factor into the story means that Superman's mother, Lara, will make an appearance too, as well as Krypton. Apparently they're also looking for a "big name" to play Lara, and we wouldn't be surprised to see them trying to woo someone like Angelina Jolie, who has a strong screen presence and would make a great Lara. Stay tuned as more develops; Man of Steel goes into production next month, and is expected to hit theaters in December of 2012. Henry Cavill (Superman), Amy Adams (Lois Lane), Kevin Costner (Pa Kent), Diane Lane (Ma Kent) and Michael Shannon (Zod) are set to star.

What do you think about adding Crowe to this cast?

I am going to puke at yet another Superman origin story. Does no one at Warner have any imagination. They should look at Smallville to get some new story lines and Yes! Tom Welling should be Superman. At least he brought some humanity and feeling to the role. I'll probably go see it but I think that with WB's short sightedness they will again fail with their best property.

I think it would have been interesting if they had cast Tom Welling (Smallville) to play the part of Superman!! Only fitting....I would think!

I'm going to have to reserve judgement on this until I see it. The Superman franchise has about played itself out. After that last fiasco Superman Returns, I will take a 'wait and see' attitude.

Russell Crowe is an excellent choice for Jor-EL.I have to admit on the casting side of things it's looking pretty damn good.Zack Snyder may pull a rabbit out of his hat with "Man of Steel".Hopefully the screenplay/storyline is just as "Super" as the casting!

I can't stand angelina jolie, so the fact that there even thinking of attaching her to this makes me want to vomit a little. But I love russell crowe so it evens out I suppose. at least its not a big part.

Actor Russell Crowe does have that Marlon Brando legendary look and would be fantastic as SUPERMAN's iconic Father Jor-El. So far the Cast sounds excellent and wouldn't mind seeing Actress Ms. Jolie be SUPREMAN's Mother Lara. Cool!!

I think Russel Crowe is awesome and as for Lara, Angelina Jolie is a perfect choice. Nicole Kidman is also good as Lara.

I like it. I'd like it even more if Crowe dresses EXACTLY like Brando had done. And speaks with cotton balls stuffed in his mouth.

Given Russell Crowe's current Anti-Semetic statements and stand, with his addition to the cast, I will not be seeing this movie.

you need to separate actors life personal life from their profession! just because he says things you may not agree on doesn't make it a bad actor...or a bad cast w/e. Same goes to mel gibson...who gives a **** what he thinks!! as longest he can deliver that damn braveheart acting back is all i care for...stop placing ethics on ****!! you ppl ruin everything good!
