After rolling around in limbo for the past year or so once former Pirates director Gore Verbinski decided not to return for a fourth installment, Variety reports today that the studio is real close to bringing on Rob Marshall (Chicago) to direct Pirates of the Caribbean 4.
Rob Marshall, Pirates of the Caribbean
Rob Marshall Who??? Why the heck would you make a 4th installment of a trigoloy. If they don't bring the whole cast then why even try to ruin the series. It is like saying we will make Stars Wars 7 with Adam Sandler directing. The studio's have gone crazy....
I agree with Whatzatusay. The last two movies were horrid and utterly random and boring. Calypso? Really? The only good Pirate movie so far was the first, which had an interesting plot and was captured quite well. Marshall can do this.
Can't get worse than Verbinski's laughable last two POTC movies. As long as Rob Marshall keeps the new Pirates film at the two hour or under mark, and doesn't add any song and dance sequences, it's already better.
Hiring Rob Marshall for The Pirates of the Caribbean franchise could potentially be as damaging as Joel Schumacher's debacle of the first Batman franchise. Any new director for this film series needs to maintain the flavor that Gore Verbinski has worked so hard to build. Verbinski had a proven formula for these films that fans expect to experience. Mind you, I am using the word "experience" because that is what these films were. Disney and Mr. Marshall need to keep that in mind when they move forward with another installment.
If Marshell does this I honestly believe it would RUIN Pirates of the Caribbean.
Gore Verbinski's style is what made Pirates so Epic and fantastic.
What sequel that has been made by a different director ever been more successful as the original film(s) with the original director? Nobody remembers X men 3 or Mummy 3?
"Welcome to the party, pal."
"I am serious... and don't call me Shirley."
"When am I gonna learn how to punch?"
"These go to eleven."
"Benjamin, have you ever been severely beaten about the face & neck?"
"Just keep swimming, swimming, swimming."
"You're gonna need a bigger boat."
"Jessica's got cable."
