It's been a long time coming but the sequel to the 2007 CGI action hit 300 is set to arrive in theaters this summer. Zack Snyder, who directed the first film that helped launch his filmmaking career, is back as a producer with Noam Murro picking up the directing duties.
Murro is an interesting choice. After directing the star-studded indie flick Smart People, the Isreali commercials director was slated to helm A Good Day to Die Hard. He decided to leave that project to direct the 300 sequel. While we know how the fifth Die Hard was generally disliked by critics and moviegoers, it remains to be seen how 300: Rise of an Empire will fare.
The sequel is described as a parallel story to 300 centering on the Battle of Artemisium. Historically, the battle took place at the same time as the Battle of Thermopylae, which was seen in the climactic finale of 300. The sequel will follow the same historical beats as the original did, with Greek general Themistokles (Sullivan Stapleton, pictured below) and his troops fighting the Persian army at sea.
USA Today revealed the first images from the film and included and additional synopsis surrounding stars Eva Green and Rodrigo Santoro. "The mightiest power is primarily led by Artemisia (Green), the vengeful commander of the Persian navy, who is second in command to the mortal-turned-god leader Xerxes (Santoro). She has the added incentive of seeking to settle a blood score against the Greeks who killed her family when she was a child."
Murro also told USA Today, "the sequel happens over time in many different locations. The opportunities for the six distinct battles are even greater with different locations and tactics."
So slip on your sandals and grab your spear and shield as 300: Rise of an Empire hits theaters August 2.
What do you think of the first couple of images? Are you looking forward to the sequel or do you need to see a trailer to decide? Do you think Stapleton will do a solid job as the lead?

The original movie 300 was visually stunning
****...... Looks pretty different..
So a sequel instead of a prequel, that's okay...'I still check it out and hope this new 300 film holds mighty courage-strength like it's predecessor.
Will this movie have one liners as cool as the priginal movie? "THIS IS SPARTA!!!"
"Welcome to the party, pal."
"I am serious... and don't call me Shirley."
"When am I gonna learn how to punch?"
"These go to eleven."
"Benjamin, have you ever been severely beaten about the face & neck?"
"Just keep swimming, swimming, swimming."
"You're gonna need a bigger boat."
"Jessica's got cable."
