The Next 'District 9' May Have Been Found

By: Erik Davis on April 9, 2010 at 3:25PM Comments (22)

Ever since District 9 hit theaters and surprised everyone with its excellent low-budget effects and well-written (read: smart) script, Hollywood has been on watch for the next round of do-it-yourself sci-fi to make itself known online. Remember, District 9 was born from a short film that director Neill Blomkamp put together himself, and now other up-and-coming directors are taking similar routes by producing their own out-of-this-world shorts in an effort to sell Hollywood on their smart, original, unique ideas.

'The Gift'

And it seems to be working, as a bunch of studios are now in a bidding war over a project from director Erik Carl Rinsch that's based on his short film, The Gift. Rinsch is a commercial director who's heavily involved with Ridley Scott's production company and is also said to be dating his daughter. He was also the chosen director for the new Alien movie but Fox decided to go with Ridley Scott instead because of Rinsch's lack of experience. Not for nothing, but his lack of experience certainly doesn't show in this short film.

The short was put online during the week, and shortly after a number of studios began battling for the rights to a feature based on only a few minutes of what looked like a really cool futuristic robot-centric, Bourne-like action movie.

Not long after that, word came down from Slashfilm that the feature film they were all bidding on was actually already written, designed and a lot further along in development than most of us had thought. The site also shared a few concept pieces that feature big robot creatures in snowy regions (the original short takes place in Russia). The feature film is called Small, and it's said to pick up right after the short ends. Since Ridley Scott has a deal with 20th Century Fox, most feel the feature will end up there.

Check out the short below and let us know if you think this has the potential to become the next District 9. There's definitely a similar vibe in the whole human vs. creature thing, and I also feel like there's some fascinating social commentary underneath it all, too. Watch and you'll see what I mean…

That was incredible. I think this short has officially redeemed the much-deserved honor that robot-kind lost as a result of the Transformers movies. And I make that statement not understanding a word that was said in this.

This short film has an "I, Robot" kind of feel to it. I liked the servant/butler android design. Very nice, Very real. Yeah the Transformers have continued to be cheapened and dumbed down by irreverent fools. I swear I could have done better in the art direction. The personalities of Prime and Megatron have been ultra simplified and are the only surviving graces of the franchise. Atleast in the latest movies they got human/transformer relationship right or maybe even improved on Spike and Sparkplug. Still they shouldn't have screwed with the already perfect matrix of leadership storyline. The Transformers appearance finally got the ultimate insult of being made into GO-BOTS which every kid like me got mad about people calling them

A bit of Half-Life 2 Combine resemblance in the soldiers/police here. And any similarity to Half-Life is no bad thing in my book. Looks very intriguing.

So much left unexplained, it piques the interest. It definitely has potential to be an engaging movie although I do wish I could have understood the dialogue. I hope it wouldn't be a subtitled movie.

Dialogue 1st Man: What is that? 2nd Man: It's a unicorn.... Never seen one up close before. 1st Man: Beautiful. 1st Man: Get away. Get away. Robot: I'm sorry. All five shorts in the Ridley Scott project use the same dialogue.

after reading all the comments I'd have to say, gaurds a twist off of Half-Life, robots 5th gen, from i.robot. the box is a robot itself that is basically born into what seems to be a violent world. After being awaken its witness to a murder, a death, a high speed chase, and a sacrifice by one of its own kind. I feel like this movie is going to be great, but i feel for the kid, What mood is the little bot going to be in?

I saw disrict 9 and hated every second of it except when the creature said "No one home!" Did district 9 win 2009 Razzies? It should have - was there any part of that film that could remotely be believable? Bad acting and directing just made it worse for me - you can plainly see that every penny of their $150,000.00 budget was up there on the screen! One of the worse films of all time - dam it!

Awesome short film I am a huge fan of robots, or what I term as mecha's being a big fan of early anime. Starting with Detonator Orgun, Dangaioh, Macross, and Robotech, so if hollywood uses the talent of the anime genre which I totally see in Destrict 9 I think they will keep making money. Only time will tell if they are smart they will turn Akira into and movie and Detonator Orgun, or at least let themselves to continue to be influenced by these great Japanese artists.

Nice. Make it happen. This is just prologue. "The Gift" is akin to a Russian "I, Robot", but a lot more visceral and as usual that unique Russian way of things.

The only dialogue I could make out were; 1. "What is that?" 2. "It's a unicorn" 3. "Never seen one up close before" 4. "Beautiful" 5. "Get away. Get away." 6. "I'm sorry" As well as all the other 4 short films. Strange.
