Though we still haven't received word on when (or if) The Hobbit will actually continue along its path to production, eventually arriving in theaters in 2012 and 2013 in two parts, some news has begun to crop up regarding who will play the lead role in the film.

I think Actor Martin Freeman will do an "excellent protrayal" of the much beloved character Bilbo Baggins in the new The HOBBIT Pt 1-2012 & Pt 2-2013. A awesome talent Freeman and liked him in "The Last King" w/Lead Star Actor Rufus Sewell (a mega talent...'love him!) and plus beginning in mid October on PBS Martin Freeman will be Doctor Watson in the new TV mini-series SHERLOCK Co-Starring with another amazing Actor Benedict Cumberbatch (lov' him too, he was brilliant in "Amazing Grace" w/Actor Ioan Grufford (He played William Wilberforce. Very intense movie!) of The Fantastic Four hit franchise. I look forward to the new HOBBIT movies and know that the finish project will be just as spectacular as it's predessor the LOTR's hit franchise.

The great thing about another "Lord of the Rings" flick is that it's going to get some British actors wallowing in unsung projects across the pond face time in America. Freeman is a great comedic talent, who has shown dramatic chops in under the radar films like "The Good Night". As long as we get a director who has commitment to the project then whoever they cast as Bilbo will only add to the greatness of the flick.

I'm worried The Hobbit won't fare so well. Not if people are expecting something to live up to LOTR, or worse yet, surpass it. Not that I don't love The Hobbit. Quite the contrary, I don't know if I've ever enjoyed a book more. However, it's certainly not as epic in scope. In fact, it's really more of a children's story with bits of humour thrown in amid the action. I think it's unfortunate Ian Holm will not be reprising the role, however. Bilbo wasn't exactly young to begin with. Add a little dye to his hair and you've got a jolly, pudgy little hobbit. Exactly what the story calls for.

Homerun! The Dude looks just like a Hobbit without the make-up!!! He's a Dead Lord of the " Ringer" for Bilbo Baggins cool beans!!!

He looks great for the role, and was top notch in the other films I've seen him in. This movie will be a hit, no matter what others think, the story is a "grand old adventure" as Tolkien would put it and will surely make for great entertainment and story telling.

I agree! Martin Freeman looks JUST like Bilbo Baggins should look - and people are so in love with LOTR, don't worry, they'll come to this for background info!

Honestly, it's gotten to the point where I don't even care if the movie gets made or not

Martin Freeman is an amazing actor, and as Bilbo, he will be awesome. I only hope that Jackson stays with this next installment of Tolkiens vision. I was glad to hear that del Toro turned it down. Jackson has the vision for this project and the clout to turn out another masterpiece. I think that it's unfair to say this will be less grand than LOTR, or less broad in scope. Remember where this book begins and what it encompasses. This book was destined to be made into a film, just as LOTR was. Let's keep some optimism going about this project and hope that it comes to fruition. My only concern is Smaug. Given the advancements in CGI since LOTR, I'm eager to see him brought to life. Can't wait...

In both the Fellowship book and movie, it is noted that Bilbo does not age between the events in the Hobbit (when is 50-51) and the Fellowship (when he turns 111), due to his possession of the ring. I see no reason why Ian Holm should not reprise his role as Bilbo in the Hobbit films, especially since he played "young" Bilbo in the flashback sequences (to the period of the Hobbit) in the LOTR films.
In my above comment, I meant to say "when he is 50-51."

Since this is a prequel, and Bilbo is known to not age due to the ring, wouldn't Ian Holme be the more logical and viewer-friendly choice?
