Valentine’s Day. In homes across the country, it means boxes of chocolates, love notes and a very special day.
Valentine’s Day is about focusing on the one you love, and parents often take the opportunity to share it with the objects of their undying affection, the loves of their lives…their children. It’s not a bad idea – your kid won’t divorce you, be appalled by your morning breath or care if your butt looks fat in your favorite jeans. So here’s the proposal: why not take your kid out for a Valentine’s Day?
Of course, I don’t mean take your kid on a date instead of your wife. I’m just saying Valentine’s Day is an opportunity to step out of the day-to-day with your son or daughter. Instead of bossing them around, shuttling them to soccer or yelling for the third time to unload the dishwasher – February 14 can be a day to let your kids know you appreciate them.
This year, February 14 marks something else at the multiplex in 2013: the end of the family film drought. In other words, there’s finally something new to see: Escape from Planet Earth for younger children; Beautiful Creatures or Warm Bodies for older kids and Safe Haven for high school girls. I suggest you take your son or daughter to see one of these movies – it will feel extra special because they’re going to the movies on a school night. Also, it's just a few hours – so you know exactly what time you will be home to greet the babysitter and skedaddle off on your Valentine’s date.
But what if you want to see a movie in theaters with your kids THIS weekend? Here are your options:
Warm Bodies. Boys appreciate this twist on Romeo and Juliet because it’s not a rom-com, it’s a zom—rom-com. And girls? My 11-year-old daughter calls it her new favorite movie. Just watch out for scary “bonies” and a surprising F-bomb.
Top Gun IMAX 3D. Why is Tom Cruise a huge star? Why are girls attracted to “Mavericks”? What’s a Mig? Top Gun is a piece of 1980s history with flight fights made for modern technology.
