Our good buddies Twitch Film must have a mole inside Warner Bros., because they've been breaking all kinds of news about their long-brewing live-action remake of the seminal Japanese anime Akira. They were the first to confirm that Garrett Hedlund, Helena Bonham Carter and Gary Oldman had all been offered roles in the Jaume Collet-Sera-directed film, and now they're reporting that the studio has now made a bid for Twilight star Kristen Stewart to play the female lead, Kei.
Of course, that doesn't mean that Stewart, or any of the others mentioned, are actually cast in the film, but it does mean that the studio is no longer looking at any other actors for these crucial roles in the film. So, assuming Stewart and company all accept their roles (Twitch, or anyone else, has yet to confirm that the respective actor's camps have accepted any of the offers), let's break down who all they will be playing.
Garrett Hedlund, Kaneda
The gang-leader who heads the charge on rescuing his best friend, Tetsuo (who has yet to be cast), from an experimental government program that is attempting to harness his newly-gained psychic powers.
Gary Oldman, The Colonel
The wisened and honorable old man in charge of the government program that develops the psychic powers of children (called Espers). He's one of the only government characters who actually cares about the sanctity of the experiment and the lives of the kids.
Helena Bonham Carter, Lady Miyako
A former Esper who now leads a cult that wants to supress the psychic program and plays a pivotal part in fighting off the out-of-control Tetsuo.
Kristen Stewart, Kei
An anti-government revolutionary who serves as Kaneda's love interest as she helps him connect with the underground revolutionaries on his quest to save Tetsuo.

Umm...ok Hollywood is in the USA right? So naturally their gonna remake iy with American actors/actresses. Thats the same thing they did with The Ring & other movies frim all over the world thats remade here in the USA. If we want to see it the way it should be then we can watch the original versions yes? But in cases where American writers are bringing animated characters or comic book characters to life shouldn't they be able to do whatever they want since it is their money??
Hollywood and their racist bullishit! First was Dragon ball Z, Next was street fighter:legend of Chunli, then King of the fighters and you would expect hollywood to learn from their mistakes!
This is worse then The Last Airbender. When they cast the water tribe as white when they should have been inuit or eskimo and the fire nation as dark skinned asians, maori and middle eastern when they should have been fair skinned. That was a wreck and very racist I think and as well as taking away from the story. Akira is Japanese. The players of the story should also be Japanese or at the very least any Asian culture. This is very insulting and heck Im not even Asian. This is already a disaster. Makes my stomach turn to water when Hollywood still goes White and ruins tons of good stories when the Original stories are not white people. What the hell is that about?
Why does Hollywood insist on casting white characters for an ethnically Asian genre? It's insulting that Hollywood doesn't think that any Asians can act or that any audience would be interested in seeing a film with a minority. Certainly, there is a point in time when American audiences will truly embrace our melting pot...on screen and off.
I agree there's alot of beautiful Asian talented people-Worldwide in the Acting field..'that can also honor this major role/Akira & many. Much respects & Heartfelt!
What did you expect from a racist industry that is hollywood?
No offense and before any Twighlight fans blow up at me let me apologize in advance and say that this is only my personal opinion. So with that said does anyone think that Kristen Stewart is a good actress? I find her acting in the twighlight films to be average nothing amazing or outstanding, and every time I see her in an award show I feel embarassed for her by the way she carries herself and the things that she says, maybe its just me, but I find it hard to believe I'm the only one that thinks this. Put aside the fact that Twighlight is a huge success with the kids and teens who really thinks her acting is amazing?
It's not that I don't like her: it's that she/her role as Bella was so difficult on Edward (which is how the writter wanted her to be) that in turn made it quite hard for me to like her character. I like everyone else though...'but hopefully with the new one, her role is not so moody. But I must say the new TWILIGHT Trailer is heartwrenching...'I don't want any harm coming to her or their baby. How scary!
"Welcome to the party, pal."
"I am serious... and don't call me Shirley."
"When am I gonna learn how to punch?"
"These go to eleven."
"Benjamin, have you ever been severely beaten about the face & neck?"
"Just keep swimming, swimming, swimming."
"You're gonna need a bigger boat."
"Jessica's got cable."
