Jim Carrey, Sean Penn and Benicio del Toro Are the New Three Stooges!

I’ve seen strange things, folks, but this piece of news has completely boggled my mind. Variety tells us that Jim Carrey, Sean Penn and possibly Benicio del Toro will star in a new film as the Three Stooges – but it won't be a biopic; instead, it’s going to be a "comedy built around the antics of the three characters that Moe Howard, Larry Fine and Jerome "Curly" Howard played in the Columbia Pictures shorts."

Even stranger than Sean Penn returning to comedy (remember him as the surfer dude in Fast Times at Ridgemont High?) is the news that Jim Carrey plans to tack on 40 pounds in order to play Curly. 40 pounds! Normally actors either have to lose a little weight or gain a little – but 40 pounds is, like, a McDonalds marathon if I’ve ever seen one. The film, which looks to simply be called The Three Stooges, will be directed by Peter and Bobby Farrelly, who are known most for their raunchy, potty-mouthed comedies like There’s Something About Mary and The Heartbreak Kid.

In my honest, professional movie-blogging opinion, this is the sort of project that will either do very, very well (making the Farrelly brothers household names again) or absolutely bomb. I’m talking like epic bomb – the sort of disaster we’ll talk about for years to come. Here’s hoping it’s the former, because the cast is solid and the source material is hilarious. The Three Stooges will begin filming this fall and hit theaters at some point in 2010.

What do you think of these developments? Are Jim Carrey, Sean Penn and Benicio del Toro the right men to take on the legendary Three Stooges? Sound off below …

I feel these three talents could pull something like this off, as they've been known to absorb themselves in their given roles. Most recently Sean Penn in Milk. There are actors that act, then there are those who change their whole appearance for a role. Tom Hanks in Philadelphia, Robert DeNiro in Raging Bull, Sean Penn in Carlitos Way. As long as the writing holds up. This has been tried with a few made for TV movies, but in bringing it to the big screen?. I'm in agreement, it could be really good, or really bad.

Jim carrey i think definitely, Sean Penn could probably pull it off but i cant really see del toro doing it. Im super pumped about this news and im very excited to see a three stooges movie. I dont think it will compare to the original but ill give it a chance. I just hope they dont over do it and make a disgrace of the originals.
