Jason Statham, Brian De Palma Team Up For 'Heat' Remake

By: Alison Nastasi on February 8, 2012 at 10:33AM Comments (3)

Jason Statham will be starring in the remake of the 1987 action-thriller Heat. Brian De Palma is set to direct the story about a former gambling addict turned bodyguard who prefers using his fists (or a knife) instead of firearms. When a close friend is brutally beaten by a top-level mobster, Statham's character gets wrapped up in a revenge plot against the thug and winds up dealing with more than he bargained for. The original film starred Burt Reynolds as the tough guy with lethal hands. His character was an ex-mercenary turned bodyguard for the meek and wealthy, and his beaten friend was an escort paid to service the violent criminals.

Both films are based on a novel by William Goldman, who wrote the screenplay for the '80s version of his story — and several other titles you've probably heard of, like Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and All the President's Men. Heat is expected to go before the cameras in France later this year. Meanwhile, Statham's been busy shooting Parker where he plays a criminal with a conscience, alongside Jennifer Lopez and Nick Nolte. DePalma has been working on Passion, also set to release this year, and starring Girl with the Dragon Tattoo's Noomi Rapace and Rachel McAdams. It's based on the French film Love Crime about a ruthless executive who tries to steal her assistant's idea.

Sleazy gambling henchman, broken escorts, and Statham's fast-paced pursuit? Sounds like it has De Palma written all over it.

I like both Statham and De Palma but Heat? It's not really a remake type of a movie and plus it hasn't been that long ago for there to be talks of a remake anyway.
