Our own Grae Drake sat down with the actress at Comic-Con last weekend to talk Total Recall, find out what she'd dress up as for the Con if the opportunity arose, and how she avoided rearranging Jessica Biel's face in their fight scene.
Even though I walked into our interview dressed in pink PVC latex as Judy Jetson, Kate Beckinsale was unfazed. We were right in the middle of the San Diego Comic-Con, after all, where such things are almost obligatory. She shared some of her thoughts on the experience and how she would participate in the Con if she didn't have to do so much press for her upcoming film Total Recall, in which she plays Lori, the role originally played by Sharon Stone.
Kate Beckinsale: Cute, I like a little pink PVC myself.
GD: I understand your costumes so much more now.
KB: Right, you've got it.
GD: You've been to Comic Con before—
KB: A few times.
GD: What's your favorite thing about the madness of this place?
KB: Well I love Halloween so I love the fact that it's kind of like Halloween in July. I have to say I love people being passionate about anything, unless it's, you know, dead bodies or something creepy, know what I mean? I love seeing people just like balls-out going for it. It's like the best thing, people weathering sticky, humid weather and face paint and PVC and wigs and masks.
GD: Best costume you've seen?
KB: I do like a fully realized Storm Trooper, just because of how uncomfortable, or a Chewbacca.
GD: How do they go to the bathroom, is what I wanna know.
KB: Well that's the eternal problem with these kinds of costumes, I've run into that one myself a few times.
GD: Is there something you'd want to dress up as?
KB: I've never had any kind of pointy ear prosthetic, but I'd like to do like a pixie or an elf or something. It's just clothing usually so I wouldn't mind some ears.
GD: Let's get you some ears. Star Trek 3.
KB: Or like Lord of the Rings even.
GD: If Rekall the company really existed, where would you like to take a mind trip, or what job would you like to try?
KB: Well I feel I was gypped out of the ‘60s, maybe it's just ‘cause I was so close to my mom I kind of feel like, it was so great when we were at Woodstock, right? But I wasn't born yet. I would quite like to have a little sniff around there. Job-wise I did have a moment of panic that I should have been a doctor a few years ago but I hate when people vomit.
GD: What has it been like raising your child?
KB: Luckily she's not really a big puker. Hasn't happened to me that often thank god.
GD: I hear the rumor that this movie has a really bonkers fight scene between you and Jessica Biel.
KB: Yeah and then that fight scene is between me and Colin and Jessica. I mean it's me basically fighting everybody in my path. It was a tiring few days. That was my first fight with a girl. I was a bit nervous about, you don't want to dislodge anything on the face, when it's Jessica Biel you know what I mean? You just don't wanna be the person that ruined Jessica Biel's face.
GD: How does that affect when you're doing the scene?
KB: It was a really fast fight and it was very, very tightly, highly choreographed and I'm in the middle of fighting both of them at the same time so you swing a kick round to Jessica, you turn around and hit Colin, so everybody was fully kind of into it. Then Jessica would clip me, or I'd clip her and be like, oh my god I'm so sorry are you okay? It's the most polite fight I've probably ever had.
GD: Do you think you could beat up Sharon Stone in real life?
KB: Absolutely not. [Laughs]
