Only yesterday were two new directors added to the candidates list for The Hunger Games sequel, Catching Fire. We speculated that the addition of these two new directors probably meant that the initial three names, Alfonso Cuaron (Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban), Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu (Biutiful) and David Cronenberg (The Fly, A History of Violence) were out of the running.
Sure enough, THR is reporting that Francis Lawrence has landed the directing gig. Of the names that were being considered, Lawrence seemed like the logical choice, given his experience with the post-apocalyptic Will smith movie I Am Legend as well as the more recent Robert Pattinson-Reese Witherspoon in Water for Elephants, a film adaptation of author Sara Gruen's best-selling novel. Lawrence's only other feature film experience comes in the form of the 2005 Keanu Reeves film Constantine. Aside from that, he's got a slew of music videos and TV series under his belt.
Lawrence will be under the gun as Catching Fire has already been locked in for a November 22, 2013 release. Also coming into play will be Jennifer Lawrence's schedule. Lawrence is slated to being filming The X-Men First Class sequel in January. Fox, which is producing the X-Men sequel, has an option on the actress which takes precedence over her Lionsgate commitment, which amounts to movie biz talk for if she's not done filming Catching Fire, too bad.
Do you like the selection of Lawrence as director? Based on his previous work, do you think Lawrence can do a good job?
The Hunger Games, Catching Fire, Francis Lawrence
The Hunger Games
I am legend was good so was the hunger games i read the books can wait for nov/22/13!!!!
Anyone else get a little confused reading the article with the two Lawrences? :) Now we've got a director and lead actress working on the same movie with the same surname! haha, I mean just saying
Alfonso Cuaron would do a good job, after what he did with HP
I agree it was a good movie, but it was nothing like the book at all they left so many parts out so he wouldn't of stayed true to the book and thats something all of us fans don't want to see. This is my favorite hg book and I think they choose a great director because theres a lot of romance in this book (water for elephants had amazing romance) theres so much action it's not even funny (i am legend had zombie action). So I'm really looking forward to see if this film will be more darker.
out of the two directors they picked from he was definetly our choice he will really do justice to CF especially with his background of futuristic(I Am Legend) and romance(Water For Elephants) movies behind him he will make the perfect blend of both action and romance also both of those are books to movies so he knows how to make a book really come alive on the big screen plus we believe he will really get the theme of standing up for what u believe in and showing the rebellion across well
I love zombies, but I am legend, the acting was fine, but it was boring, and the ending SUCKED! I love Resident evil movies, and video games, I love The walking dead, and I can name a whole bunch of other stuff I love.
I guess I am a little behind - why is Gary Ross not doing the sequel? He did a fantastic job.
He wanted more money and Lionsgate wouldn't give it to him, so they couldn't come to an agreement.
no he wanted to do some cool things to the movie but didnt have enough time. He said if it were to be a good movie he needed more time, but they already chose the release date, stupid lionsgate.
Yes but some of the things that were changed in The Hunger Games were unnecessary. And it was still about the money because Lionsgate got Fox to push back the filming of the next X-Men to allow more time for Catching Fire.
Could be a terrible choice for a director -- doesn't stick to story line in I Am Legend and adds "flavor" that just depreciates the original novel. Gary Ross did a superb job with The Hunger Games, but this guy will destroy the greatness of the trilogy for sure. Movies should have directors who want to appeal to audiences but first and foremost who are good at depicting what is actually in the book in the best way possible.
Calm down folks. They weren't talking about replacing Jennifer Lawrence, they were just stating that her schedule is tight. Not sure why someone would have hated I Am Legend. I guess you don't like dark post-Apocolyptic films with great acting. I hope that Francis Lawrence can bring that dark gritty feel to Catching Fire while still staying true to the source material. I believe he can.
Calm down. Jennifer Lawrence isn't going anywhere. Lionsgate pushed their filming of X-men back to July so that she could film Catching Fire. It was very nice of them considering she's under contract with them and they didn't have to do so.
Of all the possible people for this job I think they've made a good choice. He handles dark, touchy material well and even gave Keanu Reeves depth. My only concern is that he is untested with series material and that is key in the making of this sequel.
However, it seems to be a situation of out of the frying pan and into the fire. We now have a director but our lead may not return? Who decided this crazy shoot schedule without making sure it could actually happen anyway? Oh right…a producer.
I LOVED The Hunger Games trilogy, but I HATED I am legend. I really hope Catching fire will be good. X-Men first class was AWESOME, so I am very excited to see Jennifer Lawrence in the sequel.
jennifer lawrance was good so plz don't take he off u do i won't see the movie because i like her acting and when the squal trailer i didnt like her until now so plz dont take her off
Here's an idea, just wait to film the movie until after she's done filming xmen. duuuur
Based on what he did for "I am Legend," I think he is a worthy choice. He really nailed that post-Apocalyptic vibe with sharp intensity and he didn't feel the need to restrain himself from the material. I think he is up for this.
"Welcome to the party, pal."
"I am serious... and don't call me Shirley."
"When am I gonna learn how to punch?"
"These go to eleven."
"Benjamin, have you ever been severely beaten about the face & neck?"
"Just keep swimming, swimming, swimming."
"You're gonna need a bigger boat."
"Jessica's got cable."
