'The Hunger Games': Who May Be Tapped for Finnick Odair, and New Director Sought for 'Mockingjay'

Busy, busy day on the Hunger Games front. We reported earlier that character actress Amanda Plummer had been cast in the Games sequel Catching Fire, where she’ll play Wiress. Now The Huffington Post claims that producers are zeroing in on their Finnick Odair.

Sam Claflin, according to HuffPo, has been offered the role though Lionsgate wouldn’t confirm or deny the report to the site. The English actor recently appeared opposite Johnny Depp in the fourth Pirates of the Caribbean film, On Stranger Tides. He also played William in Snow White and the Huntsman earlier this summer, so he’s extremely comfortable in tentpole franchises. But until we hear official confirmation from a studio executive, we’re going to assume that Finnick remains uncast.

If, however, Claflin lands the gig, tell us: What do you think? Do you know enough about him to be able to tell if he’d be good as Odair? Or would you rather see somebody else in the pivotal Catching Fire role?

Speaking of “somebody else,” a report coming across our desk suggests that Lionsgate wants someone else in the director’s chair for the two-part Mockingjay, the series conclusion.

“Summit’s Rob Friedman and Patrick Wachsberger, producers Nina Jacobson and author Suzanne Collins are currently vetting the right directors” for the back-to-back picture shoot, according to Anne Thompson

It might not have anything to do with director Francis Lawrence’s work on Catching Fire – because he hasn’t done much yet! But the tight release schedule on the Mockingjay films means someone might have to get started before Lawrence is finished, so the studio is making sure it is prepared.

I have always wanted garret hedlund to play finnick odair but i think this guy will also play him well. I definetly understand why they are spliting it into 2 movies because there are so many scenes that they need to make longer in the theater. I understand completely for hp and twilight doing it because it also makes sense.

Don't cast that guy. CAST Garrett hedlund. Hes a big enough star but not too big to be finnick. Just look at tron legacy. He was the star but wasn't the star. He had the stuff to play finnick.

I've seen both movies mentioned in the article and I don't see this guy as Finnick AT ALL!

I still think Garret Hedlund would be the best person they could cast as Finnick but if they believe this guy will make a good Finnick I'll believe in him too.

I agree! I imagined Hedlund as Finnick while I was reading the book before any movies were even announced.

I really don't think he's a perfect fit for the role of Finnick Odair. Australian actor Luke Mitchell is perfect for the role of Finnick! Google him if you don't know who he is.

I think he will do a good job. Their choice doesn't exactly thrill me, but it doesn't make me angry either. lol. I do agree with them making Mockingjay into two parts though. It's a pretty long book, just like with Breaking Dawn, and the final Harry Potter movie. Sometimes it's just easier to break something into two parts, instead of making one movie like four hours long.

That's too bad Armie Hammer wasn't cast. as Finnick. I don't know if it wasn't offered to him or if it was and he rejected. I just think he would have been the perfect fit for the strong and handsome Finnick that women can't resist. Even if it wasn't him I thought there were way better choices out there who fit the description better...

I actually loved his performance in PoTC. I guess he gets my approval. I still wish that they'd let Mockingjay be just one movie, instead of making it for the sake of more money. When HP did it, great. Couldn't imagine that as one movie. Twilight, didn't see it. Knew it was just doing it for the trend. And now HG doing it just proves it's a new trend that is likely just for the money. I thought Mockingjay had enough that could be cut out and not make a difference.

I agree there is absolutely no reason to make Mockingjay into two parts.Totally ridiculous. Only doing it to get hundreds of millions more out of audiences. A total sham. Shame on them.
