Just when you thought it was safe to assume that Peter Jackson was returning to the Lord of the Rings franchise to complete what he started by helming the two Hobbit movies, the man himself has kinda-sorta come forward to put the brakes on things and quiet down fans who assumed Deadline’s earlier report about him being in negotiations to direct was correct.
In fact, according to Jackson – who spoke with AICN under the name “Derek” – he hasn’t signed on to direct and doesn’t seem all that close to signing on either. He says, “No, nothing has really changed - I've always said that me directing was one option, and so that's not really news. The studio are working out what that deal would look like, because how else do they know if it's a viable option? But it's honestly one of several different options - many irons are in the fire right now. What's of great concern to everyone right now is trying to stay on schedule and not slip back another year, because we will start losing people - and that's increasingly difficult as each day passes. A lot of people - both film makers and studios are working very hard right now, trying to get a positive outcome here."
The Hobbit, Peter Jackson
The only reason The Hobbit is on the table to be a live action movie is $. There must be a lot of hungry LOTR fans just waiting to give there hard earned money for even a brief moment and taste of their beloved middle Earth. Jackson has done Middle Earth, and there is no way that the Hobbit can match LOTR in scope. LOTR is a once in a generation epic, why be remembered for the Hobbit as his last word on Tolkien. I believe he even admitted as much. Courting Del Torro was just the studio buying time to see if and how they could get Jackson. Even Still, with a huge flop in the Lovely Bones and a great though under performing KING KONG. If he wants big money for his future projects it may be less than wholly available until his does Hobbit.
seriously... they should just drop this project.
OMG I hope they find someone to direct this film or Peter Jackson needs to finish what he started when he did Lord of the Rings Trilogy. I would feel much better if Jackson was directing The Hobbit it just feels right. I know he's writer and producer I mean who wouldn't want Peter Jackson to direct The Hobbit. Well it does matter for this movie to have a great director no matter who it is I guess.
Well, we know Del Toro is out as director. It sounds like Peter Jackson simply doesn't want to direct The Hobbit and is doing everything he can to work it out so he doesn't have to. What a shame! Peter Jackson's wife would be an excellent choice if she were williing to take on the task. If not, then probably a very motivated but relative unknown.
Ok, this seems like old news with no mention of Jackson still Producing and giving the reigns for Directing to Guillermo Del Toro which was reported some time ago.
