Brett Ratner and Dwayne Johnson just got some company in the Hercules movie market. While the duo is busy planning their big screen adaptation of the mythological hero, MGM and Paramount have teamed up to bring us a 3D big-budget film about the Greek demigod.
Helming the project will be Renny Harlin and THR reports that it is being fast-tracked to beat the Ratner/Johnson Hercules with a March 2014 release date. The Ratner/Johnson Hercules is set for August 8, 2014.
Harlin will be working with a $70 million budget and expects to cast his eight leading roles within the next few weeks. The director has recently turned toward directing television series including Burn Notice, White Collar and Graceland, but has also helmed big-budget films including Die Hard 2, Cliffhanger and Deep Blue Sea.
While we don't know who will play the title role in Harlin's Hercules, are you interested in either movie? Is there enough room/interest for two Hercules movies in 2014?
Following three Ocean's movie along with early career hits including Erin Brockovich and Traffic, director Steven Soderbergh has cranked out a few hits over the past couple years. Contagion ranks as one of them having raked in $135 million worldwide.
With the director preparing to move on to other projects and whatever else awaits him in his impending self-imposed retirement, his collaborator Scott Burns is now looking to adapt the film into a television series.
In May of last year, Warner Bros. put out an open writing assignment for a possible sequel, but after an extended period of silence, they've since ditched the idea and moved on to bringing the film to TV.
"We've been talking about turning it into a TV series and I think it may have a life there. It has some properties inherently like Homeland and 24 where you can really explore outbreaks and pandemics in interesting ways. Like this story, they take you to unexpected places, whether it's drug companies or governments or scientists or people with political agendas. All of these things, once they're out there, can be coopted from a lot of different angles," Burns said.
There's certainly an audience for this television adaptation, but with Soderbergh gone will you still tune in?
