Friday Conversation: Should Tim Burton Make 'The Addams Family'?

By: Erik Davis on August 20, 2010 at 2:38PM Comments (38)

Tim BurtonWell, it's officially official: Tim Burton is making a stop-motion film based on The Addams Family. Excited? Maybe? Just a little bit? We had heard some murmurings regarding a Burton-directed Addams Family movie awhile back, and now Deadline reports the filmmaker has reunited with writers Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski (Ed Wood) on what will be a stop-motion film based on the kooky family who first appeared in single-panel cartoons back in the '30s.

There were two somewhat successful live-action Addams Family movies back in the early '90s, and of course there was the popular television show from the '60s. Burton, however, will most likely inject more spooky vibes into his film versus the previous incarnations, and while I'm of the opinion that the guy is losing fans because he refuses to take on an original project these days, some of his best stuff comes in the stop-motion format – so, yeah, at least we have that. Plus he's back with the guys who wrote Ed Wood, one of Burton's best (yet underappreciated) films, so it can't be all that bad, right?

What say you – should Burton make a stop-motion film based on The Addams Family, or are you not interested until the guy makes a new, original film?

Burton can make any film he wants... If he does this, I hope he makes it for his audience and not just to show how bizzare he can be. Life has enough bizzare in it. Would be nice to see something that is both entertaining for the kiddies and mums and/or dads and escape bizzare. Too, would like to see Johnny Deep cast into the movie and play a kookie Mr. Adams instead of a dark sinister one. Just my thoughts.

Get real!!!...... Artists should make art in whatever way that they envision it. How selfish of you to think that they make art for you and your little family. It's up to you to appreciate an artist (or not).... It is NOT the artists job to please your boring mind. It's people like you that have caused the movie theatres to be filled with boring crap.....and the reason that good artists end up selling out just so they can earn a profit from your poor taste. Stick with the Disney Channel if you want to stay away from bizarre...... Have you seen a single Tim Burton movie that doesn't seem at least slightly bizarre to you? Anyone else care to chime in on this??? :-)

i totally agree with Riddick Riot....if ur not interested in Burton's remake, then dnt pay 2 c it....but dnt fault those tht do. Yes it's ur opinion but evry1 has 1. Burton is bizzare, he doesnt have 2 show it...it's who he is. So ur comment, mediamon, makes no sense to me. i thnk Burton would do right by the remake...

I disagree, I'm a huge Johnny Depp fan and I was dissapointed in the lack of Johnny Depp in Alice and Wonderland. The issue with that particular movie was the lack of plot and it was anti-climatic. Depp and Burton work beautifully together, but I understand your complaint and Depp could play a side role.

Maybe I'm in the minority here, but what was the last good Tim Burton film? Look, I like Johnny Depp, he's swell, but it's become as if Tim can't make a movie if Johnny can't play in it. I think he wrecked two great stories Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Alice in Wonderland. He tries to hard to put his stink on the classics. He needs to keep to his own material. I get it man, you're strange, dark and tormented, but you've told this story before. It's stale. We give too many actors and directors passes because of their past successes, but honestly, we have to call them on p!$$ poor performances. I say back away, Addams Family doesn't have to be remade. You ruin this one too I might have to hurt you.

OMG YES! I hated the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory he made. We need original things, not remakes that su*k a$$! I thought the Alice in Wonderland sequel was okay but the one that was on SciFi was much much BETTER!!! I don't want my favorite movies remade all the time, especially when the movies su*ks when they do!

the "omg yes" is in reference to the post from springjack...not in reference to the fact that burton is going to murder another movie.

Yeah, they touted the new Charlie and the Chocolate Factory as all creepy and stuff, but he wasn't! He was infantile and boring! When the new "spooky" Alice in Wonderland came out, I couldn't be convinced it wouldn't be another boner like that.

Burton is such a creative person, he should be using that creativity to make new, original movies, not just remakes. I'm a fan of his for sure, but the remake thing is getting old.

Charlie and the Choc.Fac. by Tim was more like the original book than the original movie, which I thought made it more of a classic. Alice in Wonderland would have been better if Tim had written it himself. I do agree that he should go back to creating orginal works rather than remakes of movies or books. His original work with "Vincent" "Stainboy" and "The Nightmare Before Xmas" were amazing and have become immortalized in the world of film. I actually watched the 90s Addams Family movies the other night and was saying, "why the heck did Tim NOT make these?" he would have done such a better job!!! And Johnny Depp WILL be Gomez, (At least i think so). So stop leaving nasty comments about the single best director/producer/writer/filmmaker

Mr. Burton can do whatever he wants. I just hope he's selecting projects based on his own creative vision rather than satisfying the interests of the movie studios. I tend to spend my movie money on original films, like Edward Scissorhands, and skip the remakes. That said, if anyone were going to re-remake the Adams Family, a stop-motion animated Burton film sounds like a good match. As a kid growing up in the 70s, I watched reruns of the old B&W series religiously, so for me, any Adams remake is unwelcome and likely to be forgettable. However, if Burton's movie serves to introduce the Adams' to a new generation and keep the original series alive in syndication, home video and YouTube, then it's worth the effort.

Well as long as its stop-motion animated. His biggest downfall isn't the remake syndrome or lack of original content. Its the constant casting of his wife Helena Bonham and Johnny Depp. Those faces, those foreheads- sick of em'.

If Johnny Depp is playing a lead role, which I figure he will be - based on the film making past between Depp and Burton - the movie will be spectactular! Although Alice and Wonderland was bit of a dissapointment, the Addams Family is perfectly fit for Burton. It would be lovely seeing Alan Rickman as well!

Tim Burton SUCKS...if you have seen one Tim Burton Movie you have seen them all, he is a one-trick pony! Let me guess, it will be dark, gothic, mostly gray with just a little spash of color (like red) and the hero will be totally misunderstood. Yeah. That was his last 10 movies.

Tim Burton has RUINED every movie property he has touched. entertainment is supposed to be fun, but all of his movies are dark and depressing. The joy he was able to suck out of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory could power Legoland for a decade! The fact that this person is still entrusted with entertainment treasures shows how clueless the Hollywoold factory really is. are they all glue sniffers out there?, wait, no, that is an insult to glue sniffers. Tim Burton should only be allowed to make movies about heroin addicts.
