Here's a little something you probably didn't know about me: I'm a bit obsessed with time travel stories. I don't know what it is about traveling through time, but there's just something about that plot device that has me running to purchase a movie ticket on opening day. This weekend the hot tub becomes the latest time-traveling device used on the big screen, thanks to the hilarious, R-rated comedy Hot Tub Time Machine, starring John Cusack, Craig Robinson, Clark Duke and Rob Corddry. In the film, the four buddies have a wild night of partying inside a hot tub and then somehow get transported back to the year 1986.
Hot Tub Time Machine
You really should make a top 10 list with everything mentioned by other posters and the addition of -Peggy Sue Got Married- and -The Time Travelers Wife-! I know, those two are on the romantic side but if you have not seen them but like the whole time traveling thing then they are both worthy of watching! I wouldn't know where to put them on the list but Back to the Future and The Terminator movies are on my top of the list!! Also, would -Groundhog Day- count? LOL Laterz dudes!!
All the ones you named are very good. You should do a top 10 then you can include Star Trek IV, The Time Machine ( both versions), Millennium, Time Cop & Time Bandits
How can you have a list of "best time travel" movies and NOT include the following?!?!?!?
Somewhere in Time - w/Christopher Reeve
The Time Machine - w/Rod Taylor
Time and Time - Malcolm McDowell
Star Trek: The Voyage Home (questionable even though I am a die hard Trekker)
Great list. I think time travel movies are awesome, but very difficult to pull off. One of of my favorites that I would add to this list is the "The Butterfly Effect" with Asthon Kutcher.
There was also a movie in the late 70s or 80s Time and Time Again about H G Wells chasing Jack the Ripper through time to modern day San Franisco starring Mary Stenbergen and I agree with Dave the Movie Buff about Somewhere in Tme
I think the 1950s Time Machine holds up as one of the best time travel movies. I believe it starred Rob Taylor
What about Time Bandits?
I like the list, except I'd put the Terminator as #1, and I'd leave Flight of the Navigator off in favor of Somewhere in Time. A little bit of romantic schmaltz, but the late great Christopher Reeve and Jane Seymour, both in their prime.
Final Countdown - Epic war/time travel conundrum. Modern day aircraft carrier goes through a time warp and ends up off the coast of Hawaii three days before Pearl Harbor. They struggle with wether they should engage teh Japanese forces adn possibly change the course of history...
Missing a great gem of a film called Time after Time about HG Wells tracking Jack the Ripper in (then) modern day San Francisco. Great film.
You forgot the 1960 film The Time MAchine with Rod Taylor
Last night, I felt like I had gone back in time. Was at the roller rink with my son and his classmates, looked up at the TV and a young Michael J. Fox was playing hockey.
For the record, Primer, The Time Machine and Star Trek IV ALMOST made the list. It's real hard when you only have five slots.
The most complex, and "accurate" time travel flick is a little known gem called Primer. Warning, it WILL take you two viewings to piece everything together. BRILLIANT flick. Maybe the best TRUE science Time Travel movie ever made.
Better Arnold's rear c. 1984 then now...
You've hit some good ones here. The Time Machine should probably get an honorable mention. Goldmember is a personal guilty pleaure. And, I hate to be "that guy", but I'd also like to mention Donnie Darko.
I love all of those movies, but I do have to agree that Star Trek IV should be on there. It is still my favorite of the Star Trek films. I also really enjoyed the Last Mimsy, even though the children did not time travel, Mimsy did. Another one that really anyone who loves time travel movies should watch is Millennium, it is a classic.
"BACK TO THE FUTURE" definately my #1 favorite time travel film: the triology franchis is a masterpiece with an amazing Cast starring Michael J. Fox & Christopher Lloyd (the 1st saga will always be my fave though for that's when he meets his parents as teenagers)..'the diologue is clever & witty complex especially so when/the Doc starts talking about time travel: leaves the mind whirling! Another great time travel while growing up is my favorite TV Soap/Horror-Sci-Fi Classic "Dark Shadows" when Barnabas Collins traveled through Parellel time to save Quentin Collins. The haunting Gothic DS's Soap & two thriller Movie(s) to it's esteem credits opened/paved other movie film genres for "time travel" storylines in which DARK SHADOWS had many!
A Doctor Who
Time Bandits <------- Surely you forgot this gem.
Where's Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home? The most enjoyable of the original 9 Trek fims.
Finally, someone on the same level of geek as me who not only knows about Flight of the Navigator, but rates it on a top 5 list! I own this on dvd and highly recommend it to absolutely everyone!
"Welcome to the party, pal."
"I am serious... and don't call me Shirley."
"When am I gonna learn how to punch?"
"These go to eleven."
"Benjamin, have you ever been severely beaten about the face & neck?"
"Just keep swimming, swimming, swimming."
"You're gonna need a bigger boat."
"Jessica's got cable."
