If you haven't already guessed by now – what with all the shenanigans happening across these here internets – today is April Fool's Day. Ya know, that day where everyone tries to trick you into thinking some ridiculous news story is true when it's fake…but you've already told, like, a thousand of your friends, and so now you're the idiot who fell for the joke. Don't you hate it when that happens?
While April Fool's Day is somewhat of a lame holiday, I do enjoy the creative spirit that pours out of the online movie fan community. Here are five fun April Fool's jokes that are worth reading…
One of my favorite annual April Fool's jokes is when ThinkGeek comes up with a bunch of cool new geeky gadgets to buy that don't actually exist. Last year they came up with a Tauntaun sleeping bag (created because of that scene in Empire Strikes Back where Luke is shoved into the guts of a Tauntaun), and it was so popular that ThinkGeek actually wound up making it. This year they have a bunch of nifty little pop-culture-related gadgets, like the Monolith action figure from 2001: A Space Odyssey, or, if you're a fan of the TV show Lost, how about this Dharma Initiative alarm clock. All I know is that if ThinkGeek is going to turn one of these into the real thing, please let it be this snazzy arcade game module for the iPad.
Though not directly movie related, Will Ferell's comedy site Funny or Die decided to make it look like they'd changed their name to Bieber or Die, featuring several hilarious Justin Bieber videos on their main page. From a video about Bieber stealing a song from a well known comic to one where Bieber watches Chuck Norris fight a bear, there's way more than enough Bieber to go around over there right now.
Jumping in on the action, Fox Searchlight went so far as to announce that they'd be re-releasing fan favorites Little Miss Sunshine and Garden State in 3D. Very funny Fox…though part of me is a little scared you might be telling the truth.
In an effort to show us just what the world of movie blogging would've looked like back in 1981, Film School Rejects re-designed their entire site so that it looked like something straight out of the 80s – complete with a whole batch of fake stories, including one about George Lucas wanting to make seven more Star Wars movies.
Okay this one is pretty obvious right off the bat, especially because Taylor Lautner is already signed on to star in Breaking Dawn, so we know him not being involved is way too sketchy. And, trust me, after making buckets of cash from an audience under the age of 17, Summit Entertainment will not be pushing for an R-rating for Breaking Dawn anytime soon.
