The first image of Jim Carrey as a motion-captured Ebeneezer Scrooge in Disney’s A Christmas Carol has arrived online alongside a promotional clip from the film that’s currently screening at the Cannes Film Festival in France. Directed by Robert Zemeckis, who’s single-handedly trying to convince us that motion capture is totally wicked awesome (see: The Polar Express and Beowulf), this latest version of A Christmas Carol is, of course, based on the classic Charles Dickens story about an old grumpy grouch who comes to realize the true meaning of Christmas after he’s visited by three spirits, each representing the Past, Present and Future.
One of the fun aspects of motion capture technology is the ability to have one actor play several roles, and so heading in you know Jim Carrey isn’t getting off that easy – hence the fact that he’s playing not one, not two, not three, but four roles! Aside from Scrooge himself, Carrey will also be playing the three ghosts – and he’ll be joined by Gary Oldman, who’s also playing multiple roles (Bob Cratchit, Marley, Tiny Tim), Colin Firth, Robin Wright Penn, Bob Hoskins and Cary Elwes.
Check out video from the film over here. A Christmas Carol is due in theaters on November 6.
