A few months ago, when producer Frank Marshall said his dream was for Jeremy Renner and Matt Damon to star in a Bourne film together, the internet went into a bit of a frenzy saying Damon would star in the fifth Bourne film.
At a press day event to promote The Bourne Legacy, Marshall clarified his comments saying the net film will continue with the two new characters introduced in the film: Aaron Cross (Renner) and Dr. Marta Shearing (Rachel Weisz).
When asked where the franchise goes from there, Marshall said, "We're gonna follow Jeremy's character, but everything else is wide open. That's the great thing about where we are now, the table is set to go any direction we want to, be we will, for sure, follow Jeremy and Rachel and see what happens."
That statement echoes what writer/director Tony Gilroy said in a recent interview. Gilroy said that if the film connects with audiences and spawns a sequel, there are plenty of places to go next.
"If this works, it will very nicely clear some fields to the horizon that are legitimate, interesting things to play with that aren't cheesy."
So it looks like for now, that Damon will be sitting out a second Bourne movie, should Bourne 5 happen. Renner, meanwhile, is excited to see what comes next.
"I'm excited that the architects and creators behind this sort of thing have cleverly left it wide open for fans like myself wondering what the heck's going to go on next."
The Bourne Legacy opens August 10.

The movie is not even open yet to assume a fifth film. The trailers looks good. But you should wait to see what happens after opening weekend to see how the audiences feels towards the new characters. If not, you will ruin the franchise.
