- The first issue of IDW's prequel mini-series comic for Star Trek into Darkness is now on sale. On the very last page of Countdown to Darkness, a surprising twist to J.J. Abrams' Star Trek mythos is revealed.
The four-issue series is designed to serve as a direct prequel to the upcoming movie prior to its May 17 release. Although the events depicted in the series don't guarantee that any plot elements will play out on the big screen, the first book finds the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise on a mission to the planet Phaedus.
Hoping to learn how an alien race acquired advanced technology, Kirk encounters a man familiar to Trekkies: Captain Robert April.
The character says, "My name is Robert April… Former Captain of a ship called Enterprise!" on his one-page appearance.
April's appearance becomes even more interesting after HitFix recently pointed out that during a visit to the Bad Robot offices, a production sketch of the large weapon apparently used by Benedict Cumberbatch's John Harrison was labeled, "April's Gatling Gun."
Could it be that Cumberbatch is playing a younger version or a clone of the Captain? Or will the role be played by Peter Weller, whose role continues to remain a mystery. Of course, given Abrams' fondness for keeping secrets, this could all be a decoy to keep Trekkies buzzing before the film arrives in theaters.
- During a revealing conversation with MTV News, Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige gave an update on Iron Man 3 as well as the Marvel "Phase Two" build-up to the Avengers sequel in 2015.
"It's still early days, but I told Joss after reading the first sketch outline he delivered – and there's a lot of work still to do, he has to sit down and turn this into a movie – but there are already seven things that are worth the price of admission alone," Feige said.
He didn't reveal what those seven things were, saying that those elements wouldn't be understood until the first of the upcoming Phase Two movies, Iron Man 3.
"I would say that the exercise of Iron Man 3 is very much standalone, more than and Iron Man film since the first one. But because we are in Phase Two and we're heading towards another Avengers movie, there's certainly a road that's being paved – you just might not notice it."
He continues, "In [Iron Man 3], it has less to do with any sort of larger S.H.I.E.L.D. or cosmic overlay, but much more about Tony, his frame of mind, his viewpoint and the things he wants to pursue."
Feige also addressed the overall Phase Two expansion saying, "It's pretty exciting to be this early out and already have things that I could pitch you on in a room – if you weren't a journalist who was going to print all of this – and you would go, 'Oh my God, that's going to be awesome!'"
- Speaking of the Avengers, Hot Toys has released first looks at limited edition 1/4 scale busts of Iron Man and War Machine from Iron Man 3. The War Machine model includes light-up eyes and rotating shoulder Gatling gun.
The site announced that the busts, along with other Iron Man 3 collectibles will be on sale in April. The film arrives in theaters May 3.
- This may seem like a foregone conclusion what with the rise in blockbuster movies getting the IMAX treatment, but the company confirmed today that G.I. Joe: Retaliation will be getting a one-week IMAX 3D run.
"Dwayne Johnson has resonated well with IMAX fans, and we believe his strong global appeal, coupled with the action spectacle of G.I. Joe: Retaliation in IMAX 3D is sure to excite moviegoers," IMAX Chairman and President Greg Foster said.
The film will get a longer IMAX run internationally as Paramount looks to cash in on the growing international market. The film arrives in theaters March 29.

"Just keep swimming, swimming, swimming."
"You're gonna need a bigger boat."
