Fanboy Fix: 'Kick-Ass' Trailer, 'Ghost Rider 2' and 'District 9' Prequel

Second 'Kick-Ass' Trailer Kicks Some Ass

One of my five must-see movies of 2010, Lionsgate has released the second full-length trailer for Kick-Ass, which looks pretty damn sweet even though all the cussing and violence is toned down to a PG-13 level. Obviously the studio wants to sell this to as wide an audience as possible, and while it won't be suitable for the young ones, I think the teenagers on up are going to have a field day with it.

'Kick'Ass'

The film follows an average dorky teenager who decides to become a superhero, even though he has no powers. This trailer gives you more of a taste of the story – how the kid beats up some criminals, becomes a hero on YouTube and inspires other lunatics to join in, etc … Nic Cage looks to be channeling some Pulp Fiction-esque dialogue with a weird Batman-ish costume, and I can already see the kids bowing down to Hitgirl. Check out the trailer below and let us know what you think. Kick-Ass hits theaters on April 16th.

'Ghost Rider 2' Still in the Works

And speaking of weird Nicolas Cage roles, apparently they're still working on a sequel to the film Ghost Rider, even though no one seems to be interested in returning to that bizarre based-on-a-comic universe. Speaking to Collider, producer Mike De Luca said they currently have a script outline and the working title is Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance. Nicolas Cage will most likely return, and the film will take our characters to Europe. Says De Luca, "We wanted to kind of signal that we're as different from the first movie just because we want to be fresh and new as you can get in terms of getting away from southwestern kind of pseudo-western thing." No director is attached just yet, and Eva Mendes won't be returning.

What do you think? Do you even want a Ghost Rider sequel? Did you see the first one?

Director Teases 'District 9' Prequel

In a great three-part interview with director Neill Blomkamp over at the LA Times, the man behind one of this past summer's biggest hits (and awards contenders) spoke not only about the future of his career, but also about whether he sees potential in more District 9 films. Blomkamp admitted that the story intrigues him, but hesitated to want to continue on with a sequel that would most likely feature aliens coming to earth to wreak havoc. He says, "If you go forward [with his story beyond "District 9"] it's more of a traditional film but if you go backward I'd be intrigued in that. I'm not so interested in aliens coming back and blowing things up but [a prequel] might be interesting."

Neill Blomkamp on the set of 'District 9'

Personally, I'm not so sure a prequel would be all that interesting. I mean, we know what happens – aliens come down, get stuck and then get put in camps. Of course there's probably a cool story you could carve out of that, but I bet more people would be interested in following Wikus to see how he got on after being transformed.

What are your thoughts on sequel vs. prequel?

I agree a sequel with flashbacks with the back story. District 9 was about apartheid and social segregation in my opinion. In the movie they hinted that the aliens had no leadership and where most likely workers or maybe slaves. As a real science-fiction fan The Revolt e.g prequel would be more interesting to me, something like "Amistad in space" . This would connect the viewer with the struggle of the aliens for freedom and at the same time add an ironic component the overall storyline. As far as the aliens vs humans war seen it too many times. There tech is too advanced you know they would win. The interesting story is how would they treat us when there in charge of all of humanity?

On second thought how do we know that this wasn't a ship full of convicts on there way to some penal colony? That would explain some of there behavior. A prequel could be more of a prison break movie with flash forwards as to if the alien government would even care or come to apologize for the incident. It could also explore how dealings with such an advance society would effect all aspects of humanity (financial, religious, morality, scientific) that would really be interesting.

A prequel showing how the aliens got here, what went wrong on the ship (smells of mutiny), and the events that happened in direct response to their arrival would be intriguing. After Avatar though, a sequel would just be fail. Aliens vs. Men can only be done so many times and Avatar set that bar insanely high.

Both because I want to see how Wikus gets back to human so and also what went wrong on the ship and maybe what they were even doing if the prawns are in the same universe as us or what.

A sequel doesn't have to go down the aliens vs humans battle route. They can write a great story about a peaceful -- and/or covert -- return to save the prawn race and revert Wikus.

I will not see Kick- *** of they drop it to a PG-13 rating just for the kiddies. I saw scenes at Comic Con and they were awesome as is. As for Ghost Rider being a huge Ghost Rider fan Nicolas Cage needs to let this role go and let someone else reboot the franchise. Ghost Rider in Europe WTF?!

I agree with ghostriderfan, I already saw a red band trailer for Kick-*** with Nic Cage and Hitgirl sitting at a table, and after a conversation, she says to him "I'm just f*cking with you dad." If that scene gets cut, and the whole film gets toned down, I'll skip the theatre and wait for the obvious unrated BD release. As for District 9, I'd like both, please. I'm dying to know what happened to the prawns that they were in the condition we found them in, and I want to know what happens to Wikus. Saying it will have to be a aliens vs. humans movie is stupid, especially after seeing how they handled this film. They just need to show up, save their own, and fix Wikus, then leave again. I'm sure they could make a good film around that premise.

The idea of watching Wikus develop into a “prawn” is intriguing. I agree that a full prequel showing how the aliens became stranded would probably fail. Equally, a sequel showing the return and likely battle between the aliens and the humans would most likely have limited success. What does not seem to have been considered, is a sequel that develops the story more fully. It would be interesting to watch the metamorphosis of Wikus, at the same time the 3 year sojourn of Christopher to what is assumed to be their home world and return to Earth. Flashbacks could be used to show how the ship became stranded. At the same time, more could be revealed about the “prawns”. Since there was a definite political side to District 9, the second movie could expand upon that, showing world reaction to the events. This could also allow the semi-documentary theme to be followed.

KickAss will be rated R, the writer here was referring to the TRAILER being toned down like a PG-13 movie. As far as Ghost Rider goes, the first movie was effing HORRIBLE!!! One of the worst movies I've seen in a long time. I'll take a definite pass on a sequel.

I think if you combine prequel with sequel would be really cool, do a double story feature that would be the safest bet and the coolest

Possibly both. The sequel first, though. To satisfy my curiosity of the outcome of the characters.
