Fanboy Fix: DC Comics' 'Justice League' Movie Might Be Closer Than You Think

Move over, Marvel. In response to the blockbuster success of The Avengers, your comic book rivals over at DC Comics are moving pieces into place to answer with their own superhero ensemble adventure, The Justice League of America. And it might be closer to reality than you think.

A handful of news items broke over the last few days surrounding a JLA movie, which has been a pipedream for Warner Bros. (which owns the cinematic rights to the DC universe) for some time now. WB obviously has stayed busy with individual movies centered on Batman, Superman and – most recently – Green Lantern. But plans for a full-fledged, multi-hero JLA movie always seemed to stall in pre-production for various reasons.

Then, after years of planning and meticulous execution, Marvel Studios pulled off the impossible by delivering a massively successful Avengers movie – and DC felt it was time to respond.

Variety broke the news that Gangster Squad writer Will Beall has been given the go-ahead to write a Justice League movie. In addition to writing Gangster – which stars Sean Penn, Josh Brolin and Ryan Gosling in a 1940s period crime thriller – Beall is hard at work writing Lethal Weapon and Logan’s Run remakes for the studio. Now he’s tasked with living up to the Avengers hype, only with DC’s top characters.

But that’s not all.

In the same story, the trade confirms that Green Lantern co-writer Michael Goldenberg has been hired to write a new treatment for a Wonder Woman movie, while the remaining two Green Lantern writers, Marc Guggenheim and Michael Green, were hired a while back to pen a feature film for The Flash.

So it appears Warner Bros. has started the ball rolling on expanding the DC universe for some time now, and they’re just now letting those plans leak out. In addition, we know that Superman will be back on screen in 2014 in Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel. And Christopher Nolan will bring his Batman trilogy to a close in July with The Dark Knight Rises

Why doesn’t Nolan just agree to direct this new Justice League movie, bringing Christian Bale back into the fold as Batman for one last film? I know, I know … but a fanboy can dream, can’t he?

As for the Justice League movie, it doesn’t sound like a distant mirage anymore. While the pieces aren’t exactly coming together, they at least are being created, and we’ll see in time whether they snap together to form as complete a puzzle as Joss Whedon’s Avengers did … or if the production(s) stall as they have several times before.

We have to see how Nolan finished his trilogy before thinking in a JLA Movie.

Like someone else said earlier - his version of Batman doesn't belong in the JLA universe.

The DC universe is a mess right now. I really don't know where they could start. I loved Green Lantern, but it wasn't a big hit. Superman has yet to produce a film better than the 1st Christopher Reeve film. We'll see what happens with the new one, but I am not expecting much. If they really wanted to do a JLA movie, there is an already working version if you used the Smallville characters. That's the closest to excitement I've gotten out of any of the DC live action media. Heck, the actress who played Lois would be awesome as Wonder Woman...

After everything that has been said, I agree with you. they should take the already established characters from Smallville and do a movie. Or have Erica Durance play Wonder Woman.(She's hot!!!!)

Won't let me post a URL. Search Erica Durance Wonder Woman. They had her dress as Wonder Woman on the show, though not a great version of the costume. Her red/white/blue hotpants and halter image shows her possibilities. <sigh>.

I know the one. She was on Harry's Law. For a minute there I thought NBC might have changed their minds about shelving Wonder Woman. But one can dream.

Gina Torres would be awesome as Vixen/Mari McCabe she's lethal smooth, great wit and Megan Fox would make a great Wonder Woman. Also, there's Megan Good whom would be great as Poison Ivy. Like MARVEL, DC Comics have some mighty excellent Classic character's too both good and wicked minded. Action woman Gina Torres-Firefly, Serenity, Hercules & Cleopatra 2525 fame could actually play them all...'she's outtasight!! There's definately room for the Justice League America/JLA movie to shine in the limelight, also.

I don't think this movie will happen or if it does that the final product will have been worth it. As mentioned above they would need to reboot Batman again. The main reasons for this is Nolan's Batman doesn't fit in the JLA universe as it's grounded more in reality than any other superhero movie, and also I highly doubt that Nolan or Bale would have anything to do with it. Another reason that I don't think it would turn out that great is that each of the main characters we're talking about here have such a huge story to tell on their own. Which leads me to believe that they wouldn't really mesh that well together on screen.

they already tried making a superman and him and Batman are the biggest ones from JLA.......just because the Avengers movie did so well doesn't mean JLA will seeing as the Avengers are bigger than JLA......i bet if you put the pic up there to quite a few people, they wouldnt be able to tell you who Wonder Woman, Aquaman, or Marvin Manhunter is, and they wouldnt be introduced as well as Thor and Capt. America and The Avengers movie would have done good whether they had Capt. America and Thor movies beforehand anyways....

I'd just been pondering this recently. I quite enjoyed Green Lantern and am looking forward to the sequel. With Man of Steel on the way, and now these confirmed plans for Flash and Wonder Woman, all we need is a proper Batman reboot once TDKR comes out, and we'd have the beginnings of a JLA team. All they need is Aquaman and Martian Manhunter, and we've got ourselves a movie!
