Fanboy Fix: 'The Avengers,' ‘Star Trek 2’ and ‘The Hobbit’

Joss Whedon Talks ‘Avengers’ Script and Female Characters

'The Avengers'While on some sort of bizarre world tour, Joss Whedon spoke to The Sydney Morning Herald, saying that his team is currently hard at work narrowing down The Avengers script. He notes, “Right now I’m working on a movie that’s got enormous stipulations and is going to be changing and fluid every second. I’ve come up with dozens of scenes and lines and exchanges and monologues that I adore that are not going to be in it. But while I’m writing them they feed me, excite me and they ultimately inform the character. It all goes in.”

Whedon seems excited that he’s able to work on a project that fuels so many ideas, even if a lot of them won’t make the cut (hey, that’s what sequels are for). Earlier in the week, Whedon also said that Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow will not be the only female character in the film, though she’ll be the only female Avenger. This, naturally, led to tons of speculation on the parts of fanboys everywhere. Is Gwyneth Paltrow returning? Will there be a female villain?

Care to speculate yourself?

‘Star Trek 2’ Being Compared to ‘The Dark Knight’

Hey, if you were making a much-anticipated sequel, wouldn’t it be wise to compare it to The Dark Knight in some way since that turned out to be one of the most successful sequels of all time? Speaking to E! Online, Damon Lindelof (co-creator of Lost and producer on the upcoming Trek sequel) did exactly that when he said that they’re “looking at a movie like The Dark Knight, which went one step beyond Batman Begins. It was really about something, and at the same time it was a superhero movie. We don’t want to abandon all the things that made the first movie work and have it be fun and emotional, but we also really want the movie to thematically resonate.”

My sources tell me that the Star Trek 2 story is already done, and that work on the script is beginning real soon with an eye to begin filming in the late spring, early summer for their scheduled summer 2012 release date.

What would you like to see from the Star Trek sequel?

A ‘Hobbit’ Decision Coming Soon?

The HobbitWith folks growing increasingly more frustrated with the lack of announcements regarding The Hobbit – not to mention the fact that it’s practically impossible to cast without a production date set in stone – Peter Jackson has finally stepped up to give some sort of status update. He told The Dominion Post that both MGM and Warner Bros. are “making progress untangling the MGM situation”, and that they “should have certainty with The Hobbit sometime soon.” Certainty could go either way, though, right? Personally I don’t have such a good feeling – especially after seeing what happened to the next James Bond film (currently on a long hiatus) – but we should at least keep our fingers crossed for the time being.

Would it absolutely crush you if they didn’t make The Hobbit?

They NEED to make the hobbit, not only is it one of the more fun of Tolkiens books, it's also a great setup for Fellowship. ON top of that this movie is gonna be a cash cow I really don't see why these producers aren't trying even harder to make this movie. Maybe producers should stop rereleasing movies in theaters, yeah thats you avatar, and work on getting actual quality stories like The hobbit made.

Similair to the Halo film that was never made, I don't think the Hobbit should be made into a movie yet. (Until most of the crap that is preventing the film from being made has been done with.) Most fans want the film done soon, but I say otherwise. Let the producers take their time making the Hobbit, I don't want to be disapointed with cheap graphics and dialouge.

Odd that they would use Star Trek 2 as a working title since there already was a Star Trek II back in 1982.

Yes, they should really call it something like 'The Wrath of Khan'. Since it is going to 'Thematically Resonate' with viewers I will assume a main character will die at the very end.

Batman finally got it right with the last two movies, by showing who Batman really is. Unike the previous attempts he was protrayed as a true Vigilante. I hope the Avengers stay the same. I understand that making a PG movie is more fiscally intelligent however superhero movies are not that good when you make them too kid friendly. These movies are for adults who watched them as a children. We would now like to see them in adult versions. Oh an someone please start a riot if they decide to make another GI Joe. Pumping $100M into a movie does not guarentee success. Ask Kevin Costner and Water World.

They could make ST 2 awesome by having them go back in time and keeping the last one from being made. It would be a paradox, but it would save the st uni from that piece of crap (& I was expecting so much more from JJ).

By not making the abomination at all. J.J. might as well walked over to Gene Rodenberry's grave and took a dump on it. Star Trek was always about humanity and exploration, not about action sequences, explosions and lens flares. Now they want to make it dark and gritty like TDK? They should have just retired the franchise and laid it to rest.

It's not about the action, explosions and lens flares; it's about the crew being destined to come together despite the differences in the timeline from TOS. Leonard Nimoy has been intensely involved in almost all of the films regarding TOS characters, and if he approved of their vision for ST XI, that's good enough for me. The characters are portrayed by actors who emulate, but do not mock or mimic, the characteristics of the TOS actors - it is a respectful tribute to what was created before. I see where you're coming from, but I don't think you're looking at it without prejudice.

I've seen some fan-fiction movies that better emulate the characters. I love Nimoy, but I am not blind loayist. Lets look at the last 3 SW movies. Done by Lucas himself. They sucked. Just because an original has his hand in it, does not mean its good. I think the characterizations were way off and horrid, the movie was plastic feeling and, even for a ST movie, most of the sci-fi content was dumb (red matter? really?). I was hopeful for this movie, grew up on reruns of the OS & all of the last 3 good series (tried watching enterprise... no). But this... no.
